For 33 years I’ve been in the legal nurse consulting business. From that business I’ve had all kinds of side businesses along the way. There are days I’ve played nurse, doctor, attorney, mediator, guidance counselor and even psychiatrist.
Entrepreneurs are inventors, sometimes inventing an entire business from a single idea. To be inventive in the inventing process, both entrepreneurs and inventors alike often need to break established rules. Indeed, one of the greatest inventors of all time, Thomas Edison understood the importance of working without rules.
How many times in your life has someone told you to, “Be realistic?” Whatever the number, even just one time is one time too many. Whether it’s thinking you can get everything packed in that one, small suitcase 🙂 , or that you’ll get way more done in the day than is possible for three Certified Legal Nurse Consultants or that you’re going to achieve that impossibly audacious goal – the most common refrain you’re likely to hear from the naysayers is “get real” or “be realistic.”
Dr. Seuss reminds us that fun is always just around the corner. And speaking of fun, I had so much fun on the 2015 NACLNC Conference Cruise watching (and playing with) all of the Certified Legal Nurse Consultants. Between receptions, excursions, meals and sessions, it seemed that everywhere I went there was someone to have fun with – fun was always just around the corner.
Fear has a way of owning us, if we let it. But often, fear is nothing more than hot air – something that has no substance. Whether it’s the fear of talking to an attorney as a new Certified Legal Nurse Consultant or the fear of severing a business relationship with an underperforming subcontractor, taking action is the express route to taking back ownership of your conscious intentions and to doing what you know you need to do.
This precept (a principle to live by), “Don’t be friends with jerks,” comes from the book Wonder. My 10-year-old nephew gave me the book as a Christmas gift. He personally chose it, so it’s written for middle school students.
The frenzy over the recent $500 million Powerball jackpot is a great reminder that at one in 175 million, you have a better shot at being abducted by aliens than you do of winning the lottery. Even people who play the lottery probably agree, it’s more of a daydream than a sound financial planning strategy.
One word comes to mind when a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant or RN tells me she is seeking a different result in her CLNC business or her RN hospital job – change. Something or someone has to change.
It’s easy when we’re unhappy about an issue that is completely within our control to blame our unhappiness on someone else. But being a victim is rarely the path to success or happiness.
Mark Twain nailed it when he described the two most important days in our lives. We can take no credit for the first, but the second is entirely within our influence.
