Wishing you a joyful season and a stocking filled with your heart’s desires.
I hope you’re enjoying this holiday season. The holidays always reconnect me to the appreciation of all the significant friends, family and professional colleagues I have in my life and how each has contributed in their own unique way to building me and my success.
Some legal nurse consultants think they’re in the legal nurse consulting business, but successful CLNC® consultants know they’re really in the marketing business. Everything is marketing. Whether you’re interviewing with a prospect, conferring with an attorney-client on a case, answering the phone or writing a report, you’re marketing.
I’m never done editing a document, and if you’re like me, you probably edit and re-edit your legal nurse consulting work product multiple times before turning it in to your attorney-client. Sometimes I can’t remember what I edited or where I stopped editing when I last closed a document. That probably leads me to undo and redo the same edits multiple times (I’ll never know).
My experience as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant is probably not typical as I’m still working three 12-hour shifts a week as a clinical nurse in the emergency department. On my days off I focus on growing my CLNC business.
We all have weaknesses. Yes, even successful people have them. One habit successful legal nurse consultants employ day after day is to live in their strengths.
I just hung up from mentoring a new Certified Legal Nurse Consultant regarding a med-surg case. After listening to her ramble aimlessly about the case for three minutes, I politely stopped her and said, “I would really like to help you solve your issue, but would you please describe the issue?” After a few more attempts at rambling and a lot more nudging by me to keep her focused, she finally got to the heart of the matter, and we dealt with it easily and swiftly.
If you’re an iPhone® or iPad® user who has dropped your device, cracked your screen or done much worse you’ve been limited to going to an Apple® store to wait in line to hand your device over for repair and wait some nebulous period for its return. I’ve been there and done that. The service is superior and the waitlists (even with online appointments) are long. Worse, if you don’t live near an Apple store you have to mail your device off for service.
As a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant, you will frequently give attorney-clients verbal opinions on medical-related cases, but you will also render written opinions on cases. When it’s time to sit down and compose your written report, you want to do so fast and you want that report to be the best it can be.
Thoughts for Success: When You Feel Like You’re Swimming Upstream You Just Have to Turn and Go with the Flow
Yesterday was not a good day. It seemed as though every task I started was taking twice as long as it should and nothing was getting completed. I felt like I was swimming upstream against a strong current much like a salmon in spawning season. I like to start and end my day with a clean desk, a stack full of completed projects and reports from my staff that reflect the same.
