Yesterday was not a good day. It seemed as though every task I started was taking twice as long as it should and nothing was getting completed. I felt like I was swimming upstream against a strong current much like a salmon in spawning season. I like to start and end my day with a clean desk, a stack full of completed projects and reports from my staff that reflect the same.
I frequently counsel RNs who are so extremely stressed out that they can’t see anything better for their future in nursing. They’re stuck in their past.
When I take the stage, whether it’s for 1,200 Certified Legal Nurse Consultants at a conference or to introduce a legend like Oprah (as I did at a past Consultant 2.0 reception for a workshop I was conducting with Stedman Graham), my secret to success is to focus on the audience, not on how I’m performing. I simply focus on being present, real and relevant to the CLNC® consultants I’m there for, and it works.
There’s a Maori proverb that says “Turn your face to the sun, and the shadows fall behind you.” Yesterday I met a guy, Joshua, who has multiple sclerosis and lives this proverb.
I’ve always thought of myself as a good teacher. I hope that having trained thousands of Certified Legal Nurse Consultants is proof that I’m good at what I do (Did I mention I’m modest too? LOL). To become a good teacher I had to first become a good student.

I have a friend I admire because she’s always had a lot of commitments outside of her executive position. Her day rarely ends at 5:00pm, somehow her outside commitments encompass everything from family to friends to volunteer work for her favorite causes.
People often compliment me and tell me what a great memory I have. While my memory’s respectable, what’s even better is my note-taking prowess. That’s my real secret. I am a voracious note taker in every business situation.

It’s summer here in Houston and summer in this part of the world translates to scorching heat (100+ degrees) combined with unrelenting humidity (100+%). We cope with sweating through our clothes just walking to the car, sunglasses that fog over the minute we jump out of the car and cars that don’t seem to cool off until after we’ve arrived at our destination.
