It’s summer here in Houston and summer in this part of the world translates to scorching heat (100+ degrees) combined with unrelenting humidity (100+%). We cope with sweating through our clothes just walking to the car, sunglasses that fog over the minute we jump out of the car and cars that don’t seem to cool off until after we’ve arrived at our destination.
Summer is the time of year when more than a few Houstonians declare “We’ve got the worst weather on the planet” and then complain about it incessantly. I have to clamp down hard on my own complaining because no matter how hot it is, I still walk my neighborhood. As I’m trudging through the heat and humidity wondering “What was I thinking?” it helps to call upon Smokey Robinson’s lyrics in one of my favorite songs by The Temptations – “I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day. When it’s cold outside I’ve got the month of May.”
This favorite quote reminds me that while its frickin’ hot now the heat will pass and I’ll soon be enjoying glorious spring-like days throughout much of the rest of the year. Our flowers will bloom while others’ are still buried deep under snow. So I guess when it’s hot outside, I’ve got the month of February. 😊
