Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: Certified Legal Nurse Consultants Share Your Files – Securely!

Nurses have a love/hate relationship with HIPAA. It’s one of the strongest federal privacy protections and exists before we’re born and lasts well after we’re dead. Plaintiff attorneys and the Certified Legal Nurse Consultants working with those same plaintiff attorneys don’t tend to worry about the HIPAA hippo too much. Why? Because they’ve got the plaintiff’s, or potential plaintiff’s, permission to share and transmit the plaintiff’s medical records between themselves. Defense CLNC® consultants are probably working as a “business associate” of the defense firm so they’re safe too. IF you’re concerned you can read this.

Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: Certified Legal Nurse Consultants – the Check is in the Email – Really!

Many of my CLNC amigos are familiar with mobile banking. Some Certified Legal Nurse Consultants pay their bills from home using their smartphones or home computers. If you’re a truly savvy CLNC consultant you may already be using a mobile banking app like this one from Chase to deposit checks into your account without going to the bank. If you’re not, it’s time to get on the bandwagon and get back to the future.

Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: Tricks or Treats for Certified Legal Nurse Consultants

I love writing what I call the “4-Ts,” Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tips, and I’ve tried to cover a variety of subjects to help you with your legal nurse consulting businesses and technology. Often the 4-Ts spring from issues I’m having or have helped someone else solve. And, I’ve covered serious subjects such as computer upgrades, keyboard shortcuts, smartphone security and anti-malware software but every once in a while I have some fun and cover subjects such as the Brolly Umbrella for text addicts.

Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: The Best Time to Clean House as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant

I’m mentioned in past blogs that every time you do a search on the Internet your search engine looks at the cookies stored on your computer and your past searches. They then provide you with search results based on what you’ve searched for in the past. This type of behavior can influence your legal nurse consulting research by limiting what you see to what the search engines think you want to see, even if you’re thinking about seeing something different.

Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: Best iPad Keyboard Ever – Maybe!

I love my iPad® and I’m sure that any Certified Legal Nurse Consultant with an iPad feels the same way. I’ve really taken to it, whether I’m proofing the CLNC® Online Certification Program, watching movies or reading books. It’s simple, easy to use and accompanies me anywhere I need a large format screen but not a computer or iPhone® (think Rome, Kigali or Chengdu). What I do not love about my iPad is typing on the onscreen keyboard.

Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: Don’t Repeat My Near Catastrophe

Every Certified Legal Nurse Consultant knows a laptop is not really a laptop. But sometimes a laptop isn’t even a laptop, it’s just a boat anchor. My new super-spiffy, NSA-grade, Cray UltraPricy came with two built-in hard drives. An SSD (solid state drive) and a regular spindle hard drive. The installation guru imaged Windows® 7 from the spindle drive and put that image on the SSD drive and left the spindle drive alone. He then built the new computer (software-wise) on the SSD drive.

Eating My Own Words – One Byte at a Time

I don’t like to be wrong. Even worse, I don’t like to get caught being wrong. Even worse than being wrong, and being caught being wrong, is when it’s your spouse who’s right and you are not. This most often happens when I’ve told her a particular piece of technology, hardware or software, can’t do something. A few minutes later I’ll hear a triumphant, “Hah!” after she Googles it and discovers that it can do exactly what I convinced myself (but not her) it could not. The next thing I’ll hear is a polite, “Make it so.”

Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: When is a Laptop Not a Laptop?

That’s an easy question – a laptop should never be a laptop. Sure, they’re lightweight and portable, however, if you place your laptop on your actual lap you risk blocking the cooling fans and the unit may overheat causing permanent damage. Pick up your laptop and turn it over – the cooling fans/vents are probably right there on the bottom where the laptop would sit on your legs. If the fan/vent is on the side – well, sit and work away!
