Certified Legal Nurse Consultants Save Cases for Attorneys – 2 CLNC® Consultants Describe How

I asked two CLNC® Pros to share a situation where they’ve saved their attorney-client’s case. Whether saving a case means figuring it out when the medical expert can’t, or coming through despite a tight deadline, the result is the same. The attorney notices and thinks of you when the next medical-related case comes through their door.

On the case I reviewed, the attorney was trying to figure out what happened to his client in the emergency department (ED). The woman presented with complaints of nausea. On the way to CT scan she coded. What stood out to me in the ED records was the fact that she had been given four different medications to treat her nausea. I researched the potentiating effects and drug interaction of the drugs she received and noted that each medication prolonged the QT interval on her EKG. The client developed ventricular tachycardia and was coded successfully. I concluded that she developed Torsade de Pointes from the administration of the nausea medications. The attorney was amazed and commented that even his medical expert hadn’t figured that fact out. I was fairly new at consulting with this law firm and I gained much respect just from figuring out that one possibility. The case eventually settled for a satisfactory amount.

Marcia Bell, RN, BSN, CAPA, CLNC

I accepted an assignment by an attorney with a deadline of two weeks. I had other active cases, but I knew I had the time to complete the review and provide an expert opinion by the due date. The attorney was very appreciative of my work and my commitment to the case and retained me for additional cases. I believe it was because I made the commitment to help when they needed it the most. I suggest always making the time to assist an attorney-client or potential client with a project that has a tight deadline. Just be sure to still provide a quality work product.
