Less Is More as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant

I’ve eaten just about every variety of food in restaurants around the world. I’ve dined from the humble carts of street vendors in Saigon and in ultra-modern Michelin-starred restaurants in Paris, but I keep returning to one chef’s place every chance I get. The food is exquisite, tasty and such a sensory experience that I have devoured every dish he has ever put in front of me. This guy is a perfectionist not only about the food but also the plates on which each course is presented. Here’s one of his creations – a one-bite crab salad – served on a series of Rosenthal china plates that the chef himself commissioned.

The Answer to Your Legal Nurse Mentoring Questions May Be a Google Search Away

Tom’s favorite search tool is Google. My favorite search tool is Tom! Every day VMI fields questions from CLNC® consultants that are easily found through a quick Internet search. Thanks to Tom I have become a master at searching out the most arcane facts from the furthest reaches of the Internet. Tom uses a variety of search engines, constantly juggles and refines search terms, and even uses whole sentence searches. If you want to know what species of monkey is endemic to Canada, he’s the one to ask.

Victory Dance Your Way to CLNC® Success

On a trip to England my husband, Tom, and I visited Stratford-on-Avon, looking for the home of William Shakespeare. The historic center of town is small and easy to navigate. However, we couldn’t find anything that even resembled Shakespeare’s homestead. Resting against a wall, we opened our water bottles and looked once more at our map. At my insistence (since husbands don’t ask for directions), we stopped a passing pedestrian.

Tom's Tech Tips

Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: Keep a Clean Screen and Be Green!

A long-time CLNC amigo and avid Tech Tip reader (same thing) asked me, “Tom, what’s the best way to keep my computer screen clean.” As with all tech-related questions, that’s a good one. The days of plain glass displays are long gone. In fact the only glass on the desks of most Certified Legal Nurse Consultants are their chipped and worn “NACLNC 7-Day Weekend” souvenir shot glasses.

Tom’s Tech Tips

Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: All Calendars Aren’t Created Equal – But They Can Be!

Certified Legal Nurse Consultants generally belong to one of three tribes: Microsoft, Apple or Google. Each tribe has its own native calendar. In the Microsoft world it’s Outlook, the Applers use iCal and the Googlers use Google Calendar. Medium to large law firms, for the most part, are members of the Microsoft tribe, while solo practitioners and small firms can be in any of the three.

Manage Yourself as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant

“Manage yourself” is the mantra of my trainer Jerome. In the middle of a set of chest presses he’ll say “Vickie, manage yourself.” He’s not asking for much – just for me to engage my core, abs and glutes, pin my shoulder blades to the bench and press with my chest, not my arms. Jerome is an awesome trainer, but whenever I hear those two simple words, one fact is clear: he’s the trainer and I’m the one pushing the barbell off my chest. He can’t contract my glutes for me and he can’t activate my chest muscles. That’s my job.
