There are many skills shared by successful Certified Legal Nurse Consultants, but did you know that one of the most important is being a world-class listener? Surprised?
Listening is important in every aspect of your legal nurse consulting business. Listening to your attorney-clients, the testifying experts, your CLNC® subcontractors and the plaintiffs or defendants can shape how you analyze a legal nurse consultant job.
When you do listen, give it your all. Focusing on your chance to interrupt or what you’re going to say the next time the attorney takes a breath can be counterproductive. You might miss a key point because you’re concentrating on you and not on the narrative. And the narrative isn’t always spoken. It’s just as important to focus on what the attorney is not saying.
Being a world-class listener doesn’t mean that you sit passively – my strategy is to take lots of notes. But it does mean that you ensure the other party’s been heard and understood before asking clarifying questions or espousing your position.
The next time you sit down for a conversation make listening an intentional act. It’s harder than you think, but when you do it right, everyone profits.
Success Is Yours!
P.S. Comment and share how you listen intentionally to your attorney-clients.
