Why Are You and Starbucks® Giving Away Free Coffee?

When the weather is as glorious as it’s been here in Texas this spring, Tom and I’ll often take an early morning walk to one of our local Starbucks – we have five to choose from but only one serves free coffee consistently. How do you get free coffee at Starbucks? Easy – go to the one where the staff has developed the bad habit of not being ready when the doors open.
I don’t know if it’s a Starbucks corporate policy, but it’s certainly a policy at this local Starbucks that if you show up after they open and they’re out of coffee, or even worse, haven’t brewed it yet, they’ll give you your coffee for free (if you can stand the waiting around for your caffeine-fix).

FDA Approval Not a Shield from Damages

On March 4th the U.S. Supreme Court decided a case in favor of consumer rights, one that has the potential to reach further than first appearance. In the case of Wyeth v. Levine the Court upheld a $6.7 million dollar verdict in which the jury found that Wyeth’s label had inadequate warnings, thus ruling against the drug manufacturer Wyeth. In doing so, the court allowed state juries to award damages for harm done by unsafe drugs, even in cases where the drugs had been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

My Most Memorable CLNC® Case: Teaching My First Attorney-Client to Trust Me

I doubt any of us, as CLNC consultants, ever forget our first case. Mine is most memorable for several different reasons. I learned so much, some of it the hard way. I had earned my CLNC Certification a few months earlier and used Vickie’s advice regarding marketing myself by mailing out my resume with my qualifications and a cover letter, then followed up with a phone call. One attorney had a case on his desk, which had been referred to him by another attorney. The case involved a potential client who lived out of state. The attorney drove approximately six hours one way to interview the potential client and his wife. He felt there was probable merit to the case but he needed someone to review the records. He had filed the proper notices to all the possible defendants of a medical malpractice lawsuit.

Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: Upgrade or Die?

In line with our talk about the wonders of the Windows operating system, I’ve got a mixed bag of news. On April 14 of this year, Microsoft will end support for Windows XP, Office 2003 and Exchange 2003. For the majority of the Certified Legal Nurse Consultants out there, it’s the support for XP and Office 2003 that will hurt.

Drugstore Cowgirl – Or How I Learned to Hate Darvon and Love Weightlifting

As I’ve grown older I’ve learned to appreciate the difficulty of keeping my body (and mind) in great physical (and mental) shape. I hit the gym three days a week to lift weights with a trainer. On the odd-date days I really stretch myself by doing yoga or speed-walking to the Starbucks a couple of miles from my home. As my age has increased so has my strength and muscle-mass. I only wish I’d been as dedicated when I was in nursing school.

What a CLNC® Consultant Can Learn From “Friendly” Neighborhood Soccer Moms

I live in what could almost be described as a pastoral setting. Although I live in Houston, the fourth largest city in the U.S., I actually live in a city within the city of Houston. It’s a small neighborhood with its own fire and police departments. On Saturday mornings, you can watch the hunky firemen wash and wax the fire trucks. We’ve got a couple of little league and soccer fields and when the weather’s nice the morning air is filled with the sounds of sprinklers and the evenings are filled with the sounds of children having fun and engaging in organized chaos.
