I was speaking with a woman who wanted to start her own business. While Jean and I were talking I realized I couldn’t determine what was driving her, so being the direct person I am, I went straight for the jugular and asked her, “Why do you want to start a business?” She was equally blunt in her answer telling me, “I want money to buy nice things, a nice car, nice clothes and a nice house.” I believe in payoff, but this type of drive for starting one’s own business is, in my opinion, hardly a mission statement.
Like any other Certified Legal Nurse Consultant, whether you’re working at home with family around you, in an office with other CLNC® consultants and attorneys around or camped out in a Starbucks with your laptop, I can guarantee you’ll be interrupted.
In my 41 years of legal nurse consulting education, I have personally mentored thousands of Certified Legal Nurse Consultants and CLNC® graduates. After all these years, I still love to mentor. I think it’s in my DNA and I like knowing that the advice I’m giving doesn’t come from a textbook or some other expert. I’ve lived it for 41 years and I always pride myself on the fact that my advice is real and grounded – there’s no fluff. Of all the mentors at LegalNurse.com, I’m probably the toughest. I’ve always lived a “buck-up” lifestyle and don’t like it when a person makes excuses for why they can’t do what they know they have to do to succeed.
Too often people engage others with a losing formula instead of a winning one. One of the keys to closing any successful interaction with an attorney-prospect or -client is having a positive winning formula. Watch this short video to learn how!
For 40 years I’ve been reading business books, print publications and business information I find on the Internet. Over the years I have seen many management theories that have obviously been written by university professors or solo consultants who have never managed a single day in their lives. It’s like getting relationship advice from someone who’s not in one.
Owning a legal nurse consulting business affords you total freedom and flexibility in your life. But the freedom of owning your own business doesn’t mean a life without purpose, intention and structure. We asked 4 CLNC® Pros to address the importance of treating your CLNC business (even part time) like a business, not a hobby.
Of all the places I’ve been in the world, Africa is one of my favorites. It’s really gotten under my skin and that’s why I’ve been back often.
My husband, Tom jokes with me that I have two speeds – fast and off. It’s true that I work fast and that I have an innate way of grasping a concept and moving forward with it. I can also switch back and forth between complex issues with a speed and mindfulness that baffles others. At the end of the day though, that speed catches up with me and I switch to off, usually right after a glass of healthy red wine. During the day, I move like quicksilver – the legal nurse consulting world moves rapidly and we need to stay ahead of it.
