CLNC® Success Story: A Day in the Life of Certified Legal Nurse Consultant Ashley Moreau

A typical day for me closely resembles that of any mom. I wake up at 6:00am, wake the kids, get dressed, prepare breakfast for everyone and drop the kids off at school for 7:00am.

I then start my workday. I open the office blinds to the right and left sides of my desk. This way I get sunlight, while maintaining focus. Next, I review the scheduled conference calls and set phone alarms for 10 minutes before each call, so that I have the necessary reports ready on my computer. Then, there’s the ritual of reheating my coffee at least three times until I eventually give up and make a new cup! Throughout the day I check email to keep up with correspondence and to ensure my attorney-clients are “in the know” at all times.

Then comes the work. I love the flexibility that legal nurse consulting offers. In August, our family was on vacation for a week, school started and my son was sick for ten days. Being a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant allowed me to continue working. Although these family circumstances affected my productivity, my clients remained unaware of all that was going on. I still got the work done and the quality of the work product remained high.

A game-changer in my CLNC® business was hiring for a clerical position. Early on, I realized that when I’m doing chronologies (and I do a lot of them!), the grammatical errors in nursing documentation are extensive and time-consuming. It was a beast, and this significant hurdle was slowing down my report completion. I currently have two assistants. It’s hard to let go of the work, but delegating allows me to avoid having to work on the weekends.

Closing for the day, I update my calendar for the following day and tidy up all the paper files on my desk. This preparation ensures a fresh start the next day.

  1. Ashley, I am a mom too and had to chuckle I have a similar routine…. With the coffee. I am new at this and love it. I haven’t connected with anyone yet like you who does the business so reading your CLNC® Success Story was nice. I often wonder what got you started in the business? How did you get your first clients?

  2. Dear Ashley, I too have over 15 years of Long Term care under my belt, and my oldest daughter is named Ashley!! Brand new at this…just passed the CLNC® Certification Exam last week and am still pulling things together. So, when I read that someone else is organizing pretty close to how my days goes I was quite pleased. Thank you very much for sharing your success and best of luck in your future!!

  3. Congrats, Ashley! I want to start a CLNC® business of my own. I’m completely blind about doing this plus I don’t understand what I need to know to document things. I’ve been a nurse for 32 years and I’m almost ready to start building my own at home office for the business. I need to learn what I need to put together, how to get clients, etc.

  4. Dear Ashley,
I completed my CLNC® Certification in October 2023. I am still working my FT job while trying to set up my legal nurse consulting business. This has been a long process but I have set my goal for having these started. You message was inspiring. Way to go!!!
