Tom’s Tech Tip: Certified Legal Nurse Consultants It’s Time to Customize Your Dictionary!

If, like just about all my CLNC® amigos, you’re using Microsoft® Word in your legal nurse consulting business, you’ve probably added a word or two to your dictionary. During the spell check process if Word encounters a word it doesn’t recognize, it will ask you what to do with that word: ignore it once, ignore it all the time or, best of all, add it to your dictionary. If it’s a word you’ll use a lot – like an attorney-client’s difficult-to-spell last name – you’d simply add it to your dictionary. Once you’ve done that, Word and Outlook will never ask you if it’s spelled correctly again (unless it’s not).

But, any Certified Legal Nurse Consultant will tell you, sometimes it’s possible to get too quick on the trigger finger and add a misspelled word to the dictionary. When that happens you have to proof every document more carefully in case that misspelled word slips in. After reading today’s Tech Tip, savvy CLNC consultants will be able to root those rotten words out of their dictionary and be able to concentrate on their legal nurse consulting work product – not their spelling.

Here’s how to do it (assuming you’re using Word 2007 or later). First, click “File” in the top left of your screen. Then, click “Options” followed by “Proofing”. Make sure the box next to “Suggest from main dictionary only” is unchecked. Now click on the “Custom Dictionaries” box and make sure the box next to CUSTOM.DIC is checked. If it is, then click “Edit Word List”.

Now you can go through the words you’ve added to your dictionary (on purpose or accidently) and delete the ones that don’t belong there.

When you’re done, click “OK” and “OK” until you’re back to Word. Now you can do some early Spring cleaning and get rid of those troublesome misspelled words.

Keep on Techin’,

Tom

P.S. Comment and share the funniest misspelled word you found in your dictionary.

  1. Sometimes in a hurry fingers can be off set on the keyboard, to make a garbled message that makes no sense. Then, if you are in tooooo much of a hurry and you “Add to Dictionary” those misspelled words, it can be an untimely mistake. I have learned my lesson well!
My funniest word was Charaicture (captures).
