Tom’s Tech Tip: Zen and the Art of Safe Emailing

In the good old days, if a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant wanted to send a business communication to an attorney-client, they had to address an envelope, physically place their work-product into that envelope and surrender that same envelope to a delivery service such as a courier, the U.S. Postal Service or FedEx. There was plenty of time to complete the draft of that correspondence and make sure it was not only complete, but also perfectly composed before it was sent to the patiently waiting recipient.

Today, in a world where the vast majority of business communication is by email, we think fast and hit the send button fast – sometimes (accidently) even before we’re done thinking or typing. I like to remind CLNC® consultants that email, despite its informal feeling, is still a formal business communication.

My tip of the day is that Certified Legal Nurse Consultants should put as much time and thought into their email as they do into their other work-product. To avoid a situation where you send an email before it’s ready (in content or in tone) I strongly recommend that before drafting either an original email or a lengthy reply to an email, that you clear the “To” field. When your legal nurse consulting work product or message is complete, you’ve proofed your work or message (and, if necessary your keyboard rage has died down), then you add email addressees into the “To” field and hit the “Send” button.

This one simple tip will save the day more often than not.

Keep on Techin’,

Tom
