Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: Memory Sticks, Viruses and Safe Computing – A Legal Nurse Consulting Primer

In today’s brave new world Certified Legal Nurse Consultants are learning that the potential for privacy intrusions and data loss comes in many different forms. One form could be a laptop computer becoming a zombie, having its hard drive ransacked and then joined into a botnet after its operator visits a poisoned website. Another could be a laptop with confidential documents stolen from a locker or the trunk of a car during a Zumba® class or taken from a legal nurse consultant’s briefcase while at lunch. In extreme cases overly intrusive customs agents have been found to image and copy the contents of a laptop’s hard drive upon entry into a foreign country. Even sending email over a free but non-secure hotel or coffee-shop “Wi-Fi” hotspot can give the bad guys a chance to get your documents.

Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: Give Your Legal Nurse Consulting Computer a Good Dose of Antivirus Medicine

One of the most common questions I get from CLNC consultants is not whether you should be running antivirus software, or even which antivirus software you should be running on your legal nurse consulting business’s computer(s). It’s whether or not you should be running just one antivirus software. After all, you’re nurses and you inherently know that if the recommended dosage is X, then certainly, taking 2X or perhaps 3X will work at least 2 or 3X better, right?

Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: She Bop, We Bop-a-CLNC® Bop, Is Your PC a Bot?

As a world traveler I’ve seen and dodged my fair share of viruses. Except for that one incident in Nepal with the unpasteurized cheese, I’ve done pretty well. That being said, as a World Wide Web traveler, I’ve also dodged my fair share of viruses, malware and other nasty infections (so far as I know). Others, including more than a few legal nurse consultants I’ve spoken with haven’t been so lucky. Even my remote family isn’t immune. I once spent a full day of my Christmas vacation rebuilding my brother-in-law’s laptop after he contracted something extremely nasty from practicing unsafe-surfing. I eventually had to wipe his computer clean and reinstall Windows and advise him to stay off the Internet for the rest of his life.
