There’s a small restaurant in our neighborhood that specializes in burgers. We often walk past it when we’re out cruising our hood and it’s always busy. So when we decided to try it, I had high expectations. My mouth was watering in anticipation but my reality couldn’t have been any further from my expectation. The burgers were pretty bad and even Tom, who is not that picky about hamburgers, didn’t finish his. What made the hamburger bad was the meat itself had no quality.
I was negotiating a contract with my publisher, Wiley Publishing Company, to update and revise my book Inside Every Woman. They sent me the first draft of their contract as a PDF, which for most people is an un-editable document format. Normally, this is actually a pretty good strategy when negotiating a contract as most recipients will simply sign and return the contract. It can also serve as an intimidating take it or leave it message.

Last week my attorney-client invited me to meet a potential plaintiff at the office of a referring attorney. He needed to catch a flight immediately after this meeting, so we were on a tight schedule. I offered to drive us to the meeting and take him to the airport afterwards, giving me an opportunity to have his undivided attention for a period of time.
My staff at LegalNurse.com are strong, opinionated and sometimes even mouthy – just the way I like them. When we hire a new employee I sometimes notice that at first they’re reluctant to give an opinion that’s different from the majority of the outspoken. They are often a little slow to speak up and when they do it’s obvious they’re just tagging onto the others. It’s like the new person is afraid to get off the fence and jump down onto either side until they know what side everybody else is on. Here in Texas, if you’re sitting on a fence in a pasture full of longhorn cattle that may be a good idea. But when you’re in my conference room, it’s not a tactic for success with me or with the rest of the staff.
Certified Legal Nurse Consultants get paid big bucks. To get paid those big bucks, we have to get off the fence and take a stand, even if that means not always being right. Every successful CLNC® consultant has had that cliff-hanging moment of doubt. Here’s what one Certified Legal Nurse Consultant, Dale Barnes, learned from one of those experiences.
The first attorney I consulted with as a legal nurse consultant was serendipity. Everything I did was perfectly in sync with him. We hit it off like best friends – it was as though we had known each other in another lifetime. With my goal to turn my legal nurse consulting business from my part-time venture into a full-time business, I concluded, “I’ve got it all figured out. I know exactly what attorneys want and this is going to be easy.” Boy, I could not have been more wrong.
