Vickie’s Favorite Quotes: Blanche Partlan

I’m grateful that I left my hospital job in 1983 to pursue my legal nurse consulting business full time. After reading the heart wrenching stories and experiences of stressed out RNs from LegalNurse.com’s National Nurses’ Stress Survey and the deplorable, dare I say Dickensian, conditions they suffer in healthcare facilities, I shudder at the thought of who I would have become if I had chosen to stay put in the hospital, so many years ago.

But the fact that I created a happier life for myself hardly means that I never experience stress. Like me, every Certified Legal Nurse Consultant, experiences their share. But when I experience stress, I think of Blanche’s (my sage 82-year-old friend) advice – “When I have tension in my life, I call it excitement.”

Simply reclassifying a stressor can transform how it impacts you and your CLNC® business. Thanks to Blanche’s advice, some of my biggest stressors treated as excitement have created the most profound advances for LegalNurse.com. It’s all in your perception – problem or opportunity. Now that’s exciting.

I’m Just Sayin’

P.S. Comment and share situations where you have treated tension as excitement and how this strategy worked for you.

  1. I had an AWESOME first time exhibiting! I went to 2 conferences in July and was a little nervous. I had an 8 foot tall pop up sign and a tablecloth with my information. At the top of my sign was a nurses cap and it drew attorneys to my booth. They told me that ‘legal nurses are hard to find’ and ‘I need a nurse’ and they shared some of their cases with me as well. All I had to do was stand and greet the attorneys when they came into the exhibit halls at breaks, etc… I had small first aid kits for my give away – with my labels and info on them – I had to go back to get more two different times! The conference director told me that a child had fallen and scraped his knee and was wailing – she remembered that ‘the nurse’ had first aid kits at her booth and she got one and fixed him right up!
AND best of all – I was the ONLY nurse at both conferences : O )

  2. Vickie, I am very glad you pursued the CLNC® business, 1983, full time when you did. I graduated 1983 from nursing school. You have been the instrument to change my life for the better. I thought about the struggles of learning how to get where you are at now and I appreciate how much easier it’s been for the rest of us with all you have shared over the years. You gave it your all and I congratulate you.
You are my favorite nurse, up there with Nightingale.
