Nurses have the strength of renewal. You’re a healer. You renew and re-energize the patients you care for, physically and emotionally, turning them out healthier than they were before. You give and you give and you give all your energy to renew everyone else. But do you turn that strength around and apply it to you?
You’re a nurse, which means you work yourself to the bone for ever-diminishing returns, thanks to meager pay raises and the rising cost of everything from gas to food to health insurance. Meanwhile, you serve as family nurse, cook, maid, shrink, tutor and handyman at home…plus when life’s little “emergencies” crop up − a broken water heater, a toothache, a parent-teacher conference to discuss your son’s recent homework boycott − well, those land on your plate too. No wonder you feel you’re one permission slip away from a complete breakdown!
People tell me that what is even more impressive than the fact that I went from a hospital nurse to owner of a successful business is that I’ve sustained and grown that business for 29 years. Especially since we’ve gone through not just boom times, but also the ugliest recession since the Great Depression.
What is it about Mother’s Day that you love so much? Do you love the fact that your husband and child join forces to prepare breakfast in bed for you? Or is it that your husband acknowledges what a great mom you are? Or simply that this day is not like every other when you collapse into bed as limp as an overused sponge and wonder, “How long can I keep up this mad pace?”
Today’s mom is so busy doing it all that she rarely has the time to enjoy life’s greatest gift, her family.
The reality today is that even as women are making incredible achievements they’re still battling the stereotype of traditional wife and mother.
I just got back from an 18-day trip to Svalbard Island, deep in the Arctic Circle and halfway between Norway and the North Pole. We started in Copenhagen and finished in Oslo. The best part of the trip was spent spotting polar bears and other Arctic wildlife at Svalbard Island.
