Several years ago, Tom and I took a long camel ride into the sub-Saharan desert in Morocco. We arrived at our camp just before nightfall and I have to tell you – my butt was sore.
That evening we camped out in tents in the freezing cold. I’d seen photos of people bundled up in winter clothes in the desert, but never grasped how cold a desert could get. Waking in the middle of the night, I dragged myself out of the comforts of my warm sleeping bag and put all my clothes on to head for the latrine (Yes, I took Tom with me to watch for desert-dwelling critters – cobras, scorpions, etc.). In the startling frigid cold, the night sky greeted us with more stars and shooting stars crossing the sky than we’ve ever seen in our lives.
The next morning, lured by the promise of a new day, I reluctantly struggled yet again out of the warmth and comfort of my sleeping bag to climb the tallest sand dune I’ve seen in my life. I sat with the sunrise, nursing a rich, dark cup of freshly brewed coffee. Those 30 minutes of bliss were more than worth the discomforts it took to arrive there.
The best things in life frequently come at the highest cost. Four hours of jungle hiking to enjoy 60 minutes with a wild mountain gorilla family in Rwanda. More than twelve hours of non-stop trekking down and out of Sagarmatha National Park after spending three days viewing Mt. Everest or crossing the Drake Passage in a Beaufort Scale 8 storm with 25 foot seas after spending a blissful week on and around the Antarctic continent. Was the bliss worth the discomfort? You bet.
