Emerson’s quote, “I’m a great believer in luck. The harder I work, the more of it I seem to have.” is a favorite of mine because it is a truth all successful people grasp.
I’ve owned a legal nurse consulting business for 34 years and even though I’m surrounded by an awesome team of countless employees and CLNC® subcontractors, I’m still a working CEO. I’ve learned that the harder I work, the luckier I am.
Experience and intelligence are abundant assets, but they still won’t get you out of doing the hard work. I learned this humbling lesson from my nursing thesis advisor when she gave me a “B” in a course even though I had turned in “A” work. When I challenged her, she said that while the result of my semester’s work was certainly “A” quality, I was capable of doing more than I had done. And she was right. I tried to skate through that last semester solely on my intelligence, thinking she wouldn’t notice.
I was upset that she busted my 4.0 average for my master’s degree, but looking back, I know she did me a favor. This intelligent woman taught me that being smart is not enough. To excel in anything, we have to merge IQ with a strong work ethic.
The team who works for me knows that to get the same performance evaluation rating the next year, they must be stronger and swifter. That’s right; the same behaviors year after year won’t cut it for them because it won’t cut it for LegalNurse.com and the Certified Legal Nurse Consultants we support and mentor.
