Tom’s Tech Tip: It’s Time for All Certified Legal Nurse Consultants to Reboot!

How often you reboot your computer depends on a number of factors. If you use a laptop in your legal nurse consulting business you probably reboot it more often than a desktop user. Some laptop users (like me) have a dock armed with dual monitors, keyboard, mouse, etc. Others simply put their laptop on a desk and snap it open or closed as necessary.

I’ve found over time, and extensive testing, that popping a laptop out of a dock and then using it undocked creates all sorts of minor issues such as multiple instances of programs opening and running separately. Of course these clear up when I reinsert that laptop into the dock – but it creates havoc in-between. If I shut down and reboot the laptop outside the dock then repeat that when re-docking, I’m okay. And I’m okay in more ways than one, as I’m about to explain.

If you’re a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant who has a desktop computer for business use – you probably never shut it down until it crashes. That’s not a good thing. Regular rebooting of your computer frees up a number of resources. It stops memory links by releasing memory claimed by running (and closed) programs. It shuts down “hung” processes and just plain cleans out the air. And, if you’re running a Windows® machine that automatically downloads updates, it will install those at the same time and clean up installation-related files.

So whatever type or brand of computer you use in your legal nurse consulting business, take a few minutes every week to reboot it. Before you do so, make sure you’ve closed all your open programs and saved any necessary data. Trust me, the minutes you spend rebooting will more than pay for themselves in the long run during your career as a CLNC® consultant.

Keep on Techin’,

Tom

P.S. Comment and share how often you reboot your computer – if ever.
