The Perfect Uniform for Certified Legal Nurse Consultants

A woman in the CLNC® Certification Seminar last week said, “Vickie, I can see you have a uniform.” She’s absolutely right. I adopted a uniform years ago, in the heat of a Houston summer. I was hobbling my way through an outside parking lot and the downtown city streets in high heels to meet an attorney-client.

A mile later, lugging 10 lbs of files, I arrived at his office, exhausted, sweating and swearing that next time I’d make better choices. That day, I decided that attorneys either get it or they don’t. If I was going to be a professional legal nurse consultant I needed to be focused on my brain power, not my aching feet. Plus, showing up in heels wasn’t contributing to the quality of my work product.

Today my uniform, whether I’m in front of attorneys or Certified Legal Nurse Consultants, is black pants, a comfortable flat boot and a jacket. I like to be comfortable and I like to keep it simple. I don’t want to have to think about what I’m wearing when I’m wearing it. Nor do I want the attorney or male nurse thinking about what I’m wearing. LOL!

We always need to look professional, but we’re not professional models – we’re professional Certified Legal Nurse Consultants and we need to dress the part. After all, you want your attorney-client to fall head-over-heels for your work product, not the latest red-soled Louboutins® you’re wearing.

I’m Just Sayin’

P.S. Comment and share what your legal nurse consulting uniform looks like.

  1. Vickie, I agree with you and have learned to save my feet and back. My uniform of choice is wearing a dress with a medium heeled boot or thick heeled or wedge shoe. If it’s my first visit with an attorney-client I generally map out the distance from my car to their office. I also agree that I want attention on my work product rather than what I’m wearing. However, some of my female and male attorney-clients love to talk fashion, so it sometimes becomes a great conversation piece leading to me being able to market my CLNC® business. I once met a client shopping for shoes. She asked my opinion on a particular designer and she tried on a few pairs and we spent about an hour talking shoes. I finally asked what she did and our business relationship flourished.

  2. For first appearances I wear a good quality navy blue pant suit, white long sleeve blouse (buttoned up) and low heel navy pumps. I have always dressed professionally and appropriately even in the hardware store we own when I worked there, but I’m from the old school—what can I say?

  3. I had to laugh reading your story, Vickie. I like cute shoes too, but I wear the flats as part of my uniform. Way back when, I wore high heels in my twenties. Glad I gave that up, seen 80 year old women who suffer deformities and pain.
