Tom’s Tech Tip: XP Users Protect Yourselves!

All Certified Legal Nurse Consultants know that Microsoft®’s support for Windows® XP has XPired. This means that Microsoft will no longer issue bug fixes or updated protection from “exploits” that fiends will (and have) most certainly develop. Does this make XP inherently unsafe? Not necessarily. As I mentioned before, so long as you STOP USING Internet Explorer as your web browser, you can surf the web fairly safely with either Google®’s Chrome browser or Mozilla’s Firefox® browser.

If you are a CLNC® consultant who is only using XP while saving up money (and time) to purchase a new computer (Mac® or Windows) or to simply upgrade to a newer version of the Windows OS, there’s another way to protect yourself. First, make sure that you have administrative privileges on your computer (Start, Control Panel, User Accounts and Manage User Accounts and check your privileges). Then, if you are an Administrator, simply create a new account with “User” privileges. That new account will have limited rights which will allow it to run the software on your computer, but not to update or install additional software. These limited rights will help prevent, but not completely stop, accidental installation of malicious software (called malware).

If other members of your family are using your legal nurse consulting business’s Windows XP computer they too should be running “User” level accounts for this same reason. Just to be safe, I recommend putting the same restrictions on family “Users” no matter what version of Windows you are using.

Keep on Techin’ (and get that new system),

P.S. Comment and share whether you plan to buy an Apple or Windows system for your next computer and why.

  1. Hi Tom,

OMG! I think I just sent you my incomplete email. As I was saying, I am a new CLNC® consultant (Chicago CLNC® 6-Day Certification Seminar) I am NOT tech savvy. I don’t have business office on my computer. I tried to access the free trial for 30 days to see if I like it, but it would not install. Or download. What do you suggest for a new CLNC® consultant? PLEASE HELP – I’M LOST!

  2. Brenda,
You’ll need to make sure you have administrative level privileges on your computer to install software.
If you do and it won’t install, I’d try and download one more time, follow the instructions on the Microsoft page and then, if it still doesn’t install reach out to Microsoft Tech Support. It’s probably something simple that’s blocking it.
    Best,
    Tom
