Black Friday and Cyber Monday have come and gone. If you’re at all like me, you’ve still got shopping to do. I usually buy from Amazon.com and other reputable online sites and am very careful where I shop. So, shopping online, just like shopping offline, you need to pick and choose where and when you want to shop.
Here are 3 online shopping tips for the 2015 Holiday Season:
- Pick where and when you shop. It’s fairly tempting to log into a handy Wi-Fi connection at your local Starbucks®, store or pizza parlor and log into your Amazon.com, NewEgg.com or Athleta.com account and start shopping for yourself or others on your gift list. But if you’re not 100% totally sure that’s really the “Free Starbuck®’s Wi-Fi” versus “Free Starbucks’ Wi-Fi” hotspot (note the movement of the apostrophe possibly indicating a spoofed site) there’s a good chance someone has spoofed the name and is stealing your log-in, credentials and your credit card. If you can use a VPN on your phone or laptop, do so. It will protect you.
- If it’s too good to be true, it really isn’t true. Don’t click on deals that show up in your email without verifying the links or the store that it comes from. There is more online fraud than ever and smart Certified Legal Nurse Consultants know not to accept deals that don’t add up.
- Don’t fall for fake bank and PayPal® emails regarding unauthorized transactions. The entire world of miscreants know that we’re all shopping online this holiday season. They’re sending out better and better looking spoofed emails purporting to be from common payment sources such as banks, credit card companies and especially PayPal. Don’t fall for them. Always mouse-over any log-in links to be sure they are really going to where they’re supposed to go. Read the entire link – it’s how it ends that’s important. As an example, here’s a fake PayPal email I received in an account that isn’t linked to any PayPal accounts. It’s one of the best I’ve ever seen and has almost no bad grammar (which is always a tip-off).
But on mouse-over, all the log-in links go to odd links that are non-PayPal-related which is an automatic red-flag. I didn’t fall for it and hope you don’t either.
