Tom’s Tech Tip: The Rumors of Windows 7’s Death Have Been Greatly Exaggerated

If you’re one of those CLNC® consultants who took the passing of Windows® XP pretty hard then I’m sure you’re doubly upset about the recent announcement that Microsoft will stop providing “mainstream support” for Windows 7 on January 13, 2015. What does this mean to Certified Legal Nurse Consultants? Well, my advice is to keep calm and carry on.

It doesn’t mean Win7 is dead or dying, or that on January 14th you’ll have to suddenly switch to Windows 8. Instead, Win7 is moving into the “extended support” phase and Microsoft won’t be doing any active development on Win7 after the 2015 deadline. Extended support, what I think of as OS life support, meaning security fixes will be provided until January 14, 2020.

CLNC consultants who are using Automatic Updates in Windows 7 will still receive those security patches and security-related hotfixes after January 13, 2015, but will not receive updated features or improvements. To get updates you will have to have Service Pack 1 installed. To install the most current updates click on Start, All Programs and Windows Update.

Don’t worry about losing Win7 just yet.

Keep on Techin’,

Tom

P.S. Comment and share whether you’ve upgraded to Win8 or not and what you think of it.

  1. I bought my wife a laptop with Windows 8 and I personally have a STRONG dislike for it. Very hard to get used to where everything is. I much prefer Windows 7. I am in the process of ordering a new laptop from Dell and I’m specifically requesting Windows 7, although it comes with Windows 8 licensing.
