Get Involved with World Health Day

It’s World Health Day today and while you might not feel you’re empowered to cure vector-borne diseases, you are empowered to turn World Health Day into a day for you and your personal health. If you would like to get involved, start with breakfast. Any registered nurse will tell you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Why? Because it jump-starts your metabolism and refuels your body from your eight-hour overnight fast (break fast – get it?). What we eat for breakfast also sets the tone for the rest of the day. For example, bad choices can dull our mind and set us up for unhealthy food cravings, all of which adversely impact your productivity as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant.

Tom jokes with me that I like dinner for breakfast and that’s true. I’ve been known to eat chicken and veggies for breakfast. I love eggs – just not every morning. I think the French and Italians get it right. My favorite breakfasts are European-style with plenty of fresh fruits, meats, cheeses and plenty of olive oil.

Airports are challenging, which is exactly where I found myself yesterday flying to the Orlando CLNC® ertification Seminar. Most airports rigidly adhere to the traditional “American” breakfast foods like sausage, egg and cheese sandwiches, Cinnabons® or yogurt and cereal parfaits until 10:00am or later. If I didn’t know better, I’d think this tactic is a plot by the airlines to put all passengers into a sugar coma so they remain subdued for the entire flight.

I was thankful yesterday to find an unexpectedly tasty and fresh Cobb salad at the airport after rejecting every other “breakfast” choice outright.

Somewhere along the line, breakfast was turned from a healthy meal into a sugar, fat and wheat fest. Part of the problem is a food pyramid that (thanks, to W.K. Kellogg) is stacked with the nonsense that grains and grain-products are good for us. We’ve also been brainwashed to believe that breakfast time is for breakfast foods only.

I promise I won’t start beating the Wheat Belly drum again, but that bowl of fatty, sugary granola or whole-wheat breakfast burrito crammed with some kind of processed meat, trans-fats and artificially-colored, cheese-like-product isn’t healthy.

Even I’m tempted when I’m hungry and facing a 3-hour flight to grab whatever I can find, knowing the airplane food, if there is any, will be worse. But part of the Real Patient’s Bill of Rights that I wrote in a previous blog is the obligation to monitor (not just observe) what I put into my mouth. That 600 calorie, 45 grams of fat, Glorious Morning Muffin isn’t exactly on the list. That’s why I carry a hefty bag of raw nuts when I travel – to ward off that evil muffin.

Let’s do an experiment for just one week in honor of World Health Day. Whether you’re at home or traveling, explore having dinner for breakfast and see how it changes your day, your energy levels and your productivity. I guarantee this will be a career changer – your mind will be sharper and your cravings for bagels and Red Bull® reduced. Try this approach and you’ll be so impressed that you’ll never go back to starting your day at Denny’s® again. Plus, with this new focus your CLNC business will reach new heights.
