Deadlines Can Be Deadly for Certified Legal Nurse Consultants

Deadlines can become a double-edged sword for CLNC® consultants. On one hand, a generous deadline creates the space for you to produce your highest quality work product. Likewise, a short deadline trains you to be efficient and helps you learn how to create work product that is cost-effective and “good enough.”

Generous deadlines can lead to inventive rationalizing for procrastinating until the project becomes absolutely imperative. Granted, creating our own short deadlines can help us cut the fat off a project and encourage us to think outside the box for simple solutions. But they can also create unnecessary stress and a less than stellar work product.

How do you deal with deadlines in your legal nurse consulting business? When the attorney-client gives you a two-month deadline, do you jump on the case? Or do you wait until the deadline is looming to get focused, while meals, family and personal hygiene are all forgotten in favor of hot and cold caffeine?

The next time you find yourself in the wee hours of the morning, drinking your fourth cup of black coffee and trying to meet a deadline for your CLNC business, ask yourself, “Did I create this short deadline myself and how will it affect my attorney-client?”

You’re only as good as your last work-product. If that work product is rushed and less than perfect, you’re the one to blame, not the deadline. The key to good customer service is putting the customer first, not putting the customer off.

Now, you’ll have to excuse me, I’ve got a project due in September I’ve got to start working on (September 2014 that is).

I’m just sayin’

P.S. Comment and share how you tackle tight deadlines.
