A Day in the Life of Certified Legal Nurse Consultant Ashley Moreau
by Ashley Moreau, RN-F, BSN, CCS, CLNC
A typical day for me closely resembles that of any mom. I wake up at 6:00am, wake the kids, get dressed, prepare breakfast for everyone and drop the kids off at school for 7:00am.
I then start my workday. I open the office blinds to the right and left sides of my desk. This way I get sunlight, while maintaining focus. Next, I review the scheduled conference calls and set phone alarms for 10 minutes before each call, so that I have the necessary reports ready on my computer. Then, there’s the ritual of reheating my coffee at least three times until I eventually give up and make a new cup! Throughout the day I check email to keep up with correspondence and to ensure my attorney-clients are “in the know” at all times.
Then comes the work. I love the flexibility that legal nurse consulting offers. In August, our family was on vacation for a week, school started and my son was sick for ten days. Being a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant allowed me to continue working. Although these family circumstances affected my productivity, my clients remained unaware of all that was going on. I still got the work done and the quality of the work product remained high.
A game-changer in my CLNC® business was hiring for a clerical position. Early on, I realized that when I’m doing chronologies (and I do a lot of them!), the grammatical errors in nursing documentation are extensive and time-consuming. It was a beast, and this significant hurdle was slowing down my report completion. I currently have two assistants. It’s hard to let go of the work, but delegating allows me to avoid having to work on the weekends.
Closing for the day, I update my calendar for the following day and tidy up all the paper files on my desk. This preparation ensures a fresh start the next day.
