Tom’s Tech Tip: Update Your Browsers – NOW

I know many Certified Legal Nurse Consultants with old computers, maybe not with monochrome screens but close. I also know many CLNC® consultants with brand spanking new, or nearly new, Macs, Windows 8 and Windows 7 machines. If you’re still running Windows XP, it’s really time to move. If you’re running Internet Explorer on a Windows XP machine take heed of this notice from CERT, a division of the Department of Homeland Security. Running IE and XP creates a security risk for your computer and Cert recommends you move to a different browser. I recommend Firefox or Chrome and I recommend you move quickly.

No matter the age of your computer, my CLNC amigos need to keep your web browsers up to date. Some are easier to do than others – Google’s® Chrome® browser updates itself. Firefox® can be set to do the same. Even Internet Explorer® 11 can be set to automatically update either by itself or as part of Windows updates (which you should do anyway). Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: Certified Legal Nurse Consultants – It’s Time to Clear Your Cache!

The cache on your web browser is where the copies of pages from the various legal nurse consulting-related websites you’ve visited are stored. Each time you visit a website the browser is supposed to pull up the “cached” site while downloading the “new” site. This is to speed up your browser’s apparent performance. All browsers have a default setting that limits the size or amount of memory of this cache. And the more you surf the web or do research for your legal nurse consulting business, the more pages are stored in it. Consequently, the more incrementally slower it may become to load a page (as it looks for the old copy).

Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: What’s the Most Dangerous Thing on Your Computer?

Most Certified Legal Nurse Consultants will probably respond “my spouse or my children.” But the answer is surprising – it’s your web browser. Of course users contribute to the danger by constantly clicking on things they shouldn’t, downloading memory-hogging “enhancements” and visiting unsafe websites. But no matter who is using it, the web browser is the point of entry for all sorts of dangers. We all use the web – whether it’s for doing research for your legal nurse consulting business, researching attorney-prospects or using web-based email.

Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: There May Be No Short-Cuts to Success But There Are to Your Bookmarks

I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing I like less than going to bookmark a webpage and having to click on either Bookmarks and then Bookmark This Page or onto Favorites, then Add to Favorites or some other such multi-step process. When you’re a busy Certified Legal Nurse Consultant, time does equal money so here’s a time-saver for all my CLNC amigos. Instead of mousing about, clicking and clicking to bookmark your new, favorite legal nurse consulting resource, just hold down your Control button and hit the “D” button or “Ctrl-D” in tech-speak.
