As a member of the National Alliance of Certified Legal Nurse Consultants (NACLNC) you are part of a thriving, growing and ever-changing organization. The legal nurse consulting specialty is what it is because of each of you. Legal nurse consulting is not a separate entity. You ARE legal nurse consulting. Together we are part of one organism – you could say we are each other’s harvest and each other’s business.
When I plan a project or event I expect the best, but plan for the worst. For example, when I fly to a CLNC Certification Seminar city I’ll usually take an early morning flight to ensure I arrive timely even if there are flight delays or cancellations. Sure, I can take the chance that everything will go perfectly and avoid getting to the airport at the crack of dawn by flying out much later in the day. But that strategy only works if everything goes perfectly, which you know if you fly, is as rare as getting good service or an in-flight meal!
One of the highest compliments you can receive from an attorney-client is that you’ve made a complex healthcare issue seem simple. The best legal nurse consulting work product is graced with the sophistication of simplicity. When we break the complex down into the simple and understandable we do the attorney-client a service that helps her to ultimately educate the jury on the complexities of the case in a way that any non-healthcare provider can understand.
How do you attain what seems like an impossible legal nurse consulting goal? It’s simple: Apply persistence to the necessary tasks at hand. When you put persistence behind your goal, what formerly seemed impossible becomes an attainable reality.
Why one person succeeds more than another is not always obvious to the rest of us. Even a successful talent like Richard Gere can’t always articulate the reasons for his own success. He’s said, “Certainly there have been better actors than me who have had no careers. Why? I don’t know.”
ICU nurse, attorney and a very successful legal nurse consultant combined into one Vickie adds up to a speedy, decisive personality. In the world of business, that can be a positive and sometimes a negative attribute.
What’s expensive? That’s a question I’ve asked an RN (or two) who has expressed that starting a new career as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant is expensive.
Entrepreneurs are inventors, sometimes inventing an entire business from a single idea. To be inventive in the inventing process, both entrepreneurs and inventors alike often need to break established rules. Indeed, one of the greatest inventors of all time, Thomas Edison understood the importance of working without rules.
Dr. Seuss reminds us that fun is always just around the corner. And speaking of fun, I had so much fun on the 2015 NACLNC Conference Cruise watching (and playing with) all of the Certified Legal Nurse Consultants. Between receptions, excursions, meals and sessions, it seemed that everywhere I went there was someone to have fun with – fun was always just around the corner.
This precept (a principle to live by), “Don’t be friends with jerks,” comes from the book Wonder. My 10-year-old nephew gave me the book as a Christmas gift. He personally chose it, so it’s written for middle school students.
