Most RNs think they have no choice in whether they get a pay raise or not. That’s simply not true. You have more control over a pay raise than you think. Just don’t expect it to come from the hospital where you work.
One variable that contributes to the huge level of stress among RNs is the fact that RNs are working harder than ever with little to no reward. Indeed, whether or not you get a pay raise in your RN job is dependent upon the kindness and generosity of healthcare administrators – people well known for rarely looking out for RNs. According to the Department of Commerce, RNs are losing ground in the salary department even as hospital revenues are reaching record highs.
No one labors harder than an RN in their hospital job. Nurses aren’t afraid of hard work, but in LegalNurse.com’s National Nurses’ Stress Survey 84% of RNs stated they are not fairly compensated or want more pay. This finding should come as no surprise as the salary outlook for RNs in 2014 has not been terrific.
