Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: Time to Clean Things Up (A Bit)!

My hard drive is filling up fast and getting slower than an office nurse. I’ve only got about 320 GB total space, and with all my photos, music, audio and video recordings and legal nurse consulting business-related documents, it’s darn near full. I don’t know about you, but I think it’s time to clean things up before I run into serious issues.

Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: Tom’s Super-Secret Laptop Buying Tips

I’m finally getting ready to buy a new laptop. But, even I, Tom the Tech Tipper, find the market to be daunting. Do I buy Sony, Dell, Lenovo, some other big brand or do I build my own? Do I buy dual-core, quad-core or Marine-core? Should I get the biggest screen I can or limit myself to one that will fit through a door and/or on an airplane tray? Then there’s the whole issue of SSD, SIDS and ADHD.

Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: Remind Me to Remind You to Turn Off the Reminders!

Reminders are a necessary part of calendars, and for busy Certified Legal Nurse Consultants, calendars are a necessary part of life. Luckily, many calendaring apps give you the option to set an aural (and sometimes vibrating) “reminder” or “alert” for a calendar event. Alerts help ensure that you don’t miss that appointment with your favorite attorney-client or to make that important call marketing your legal nurse consulting business to a new attorney. You can create an alert as a reminder for an event that is anywhere from minutes to hours, to days away.

Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: Are You Seeing the Forest or Just Looking at the Trees?

Monday evening, while Vickie and I were slaving over our hot keyboards with our usual single-minded focus, I suddenly got bumped offline. Just as I’d advise any Certified Legal Nurse Consultant, the first thing I did was close my web browser, then reopen it and try to reconnect. That didn’t work. Next, I glanced over at Vickie and saw, to my absolute horror, that she was still connected to our corporate VPN, happily working away.

Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: What’s a Keyboard Worth to My Legal Nurse Consulting Business?

I recently had to replace Vickie’s super-small laptop with a cool fast machine running Window® 7. In our home office she runs it from a docking station like I do. Part of the laptop replacement process involved running the new laptop side-by-side with her old one until we were sure all the settings, programs, etc. were identical on both machines. When I’d matched it all up and it was time to swap them out, I realized that although the new dock has lots of USB ports there’s not one good-old-fashioned PS2 port (PS2 connectors are those round plugs full of pins used to connect your keyboard and mouse). The station also didn’t have a VGA (video graphics array – old school) plug for the monitor, but Vickie’s cinema-sized monitor has a DV-I (digital video interface – new school) connector and it plugged right in, as did her rollerball mouse, external speakers, Dragon Naturally Speaking headset, webcam, charging cables for her iPhone® and her BlueAnt® headset and extension cables for her digital camera and Flip® video recorder.

Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: Clean Up Your Act (and Your PC While You’re at It)

Every computer has cookies. Some come from the Internet and are auto-stored on your hard drive in your web browser. Others are stored in your keyboard – they’re the detritus of all those years of Oreos you’ve munched on while hunched over your computer. What’s a CLNC consultant to do other than start a carb-free diet?

Tom’s Tuesday Tech Tip: Bill Gates and Steve Jobs Turn 25 (Sort of)

A couple of Thursdays ago, I posted a blog about my birthday (thanx again everyone). Today I’d like to remind everyone of two more birthdays – both are about half my age and both are almost as important as mine. They’re the birthdays of whats, not whos, and they’re whats you either love or hate (or both at once).
