Even though it’s been a long time since I’ve been in a hospital for any reason other than to visit friends and family, my ICU habits are firmly in place. That makes me the company ICU nurse. In the ICU I learned that you don’t just wait for the patient to crump and then call for the crash cart. By then it’s too late. Instead, you look for the early signs of circling the drain and act on them.
ICU nurses are good at a lot of things – one of which is giving orders in times of crisis. That ability has helped me feel quite at ease giving directives as the CEO of my legal nurse consulting business. I hire and prefer people who are comfortable with disagreeing with me. I do not like working with, nor does LegalNurse.com benefit from “yes” people. But once a decision is final my staff is also great at not making me repeat myself. Of course no decision is ever final until they’ve all had their say. Then it’s really final.
Independence Day means different things to different people. For some people it represents the traditional July 4th American Independence Day. I am privileged to have traveled all over the world and have visited many amazing places. But one thing I am grateful for each and every day is that I am an American.
Independence Day can also be about a day that you discovered your newfound independence: the day you went full-time as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant and left the hospital behind. Or the day you left a toxic relationship. Or the day you discovered you could make it to the peak of the mountain.
Happy Independence Day – wherever you are in America and wherever you are in your personal quest for independence.

Everybody loves a little, or a lot of, foreplay – just not when they’re really busy. Attorneys are crazy busy and for them, time is money. The Leapfrog Group, a non-profit organization, just released its Hospital Safety Score. 2,652 hospitals were graded on overall performance in keeping patients safe from medical errors and preventable death or injuries. Their new grading systems utilized expert analysis of publicly available data using 26 evidence-based, national measures of hospital safety.
We celebrate staff birthdays once a month at LegalNurse.com. We used to gather in the conference room, light the candles on a big cake (23 employees eat a lot of cake and no, it wasn’t stale white cake) and sing a bad version of “Happy Birthday” to those whose birthdays was being feted. Cakes don’t tempt me much, so I easily passed up a slice. When I’m working I keep sugar and processed carbs out of my diet. I find my mind is sharper and my energy stays high. Instead, I eat lots of veggies and protein (which increases focus and awareness). Do I need to mention starting my day with two cups of healthy green tea and ending it with a small amount of healthy red wine?
Every morning, my first thought after I wake up, just like every other husband in America, is “How can I make my wife happy today?” Some days it’s easy. Other days, let’s just say it’s easier.
Have you noticed that you’re getting a lot less snail mail these days? Technology rules and one day soon our postal system won’t be delivering those stacks of magazines and catalogs to our door six days a week. The trend toward email and texting is exactly why this is the perfect time to send postcards to attorney-prospects. I actually notice postcards more today than I did ten years ago because I receive a lot fewer of them.
