How Much Time Are You Willing to Give as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant?

Certified Legal Nurse Consultants engage in a variety of communications with a variety of people. We discuss cases with our attorney-clients, CLNC subcontractors and attorney-prospects. The key to having an effective conversation is not just listening, but also engaging and knowing when to end. One of the Institute’s customer service representatives told me about the time he spent almost an hour speaking with a prospective CLNC consultant. He listened to her talk about her life, family and dissatisfaction with her current nursing position. They talked about legal nurse consulting and the freedom it provides and they just talked, but according to Evan, he did a lot more listening than talking.

Step Up to Step Out as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant!

When you step out to become a CLNC consultant you’re making the first and most important decision in your new career as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant. But stepping out also requires that you step up. This means that you’ve got to step up and embrace new thoughts to see yourself as a successful Certified Legal Nurse Consultant. Then you have to step up and embrace discomfort as you study the CLNC Certification Program and learn all kinds of new information that will challenge what you think you know.

My Most Memorable CLNC® Case

My Most Memorable CLNC® Case: We Did the Case for Free and Everyone Was a Winner

While attending the NACLNC Conference I was reminded to keep marketing even when I have cases. Vickie’s conferences always get me motivated and ready to go! When I got home still revved up, my thoughts turned to how to get our CLNC business on more attorney’s radars. I started hearing on the news about one of our local active DA offices. This DA seemed to attract a lot of media attention. The idea hit me that maybe we could help! I talked with my partner, JoAnn, about volunteering to do a case. Giving back to our community would benefit the DA’s office and we would continue to build our CLNC skills.

Legal Nurse Consultant Success Story

CLNC® Success Story: I Stepped Out of My Comfort Zone and I Love It!

I completed Vickie’s CLNC Certification Program after a local attorney suggested that I look into legal nurse consulting. I had recently torn an article about legal nurse consulting out of my Nurse Practitioner Journal. I considered those two coincidences to be a sign. What a sign it truly was!

Is It Time to Junk Your Old Car?

After 12 years, Tom finally bought a new car. It seemed every time he turned around something was wrong with the old global warmer, necessitating expensive repairs and the inconveniences that go with them. After it became clear that passing inspection would require a wheels-to-roof rebuild, we agreed we could keep putting good money into a bad car or we could buy a new one. He’s much happier now and his new global warmer rides much more comfortably and reliably than his old one.

If You Feel Invisible – Read This!

I recently mentored a CLNC student, Joanne, who shared that she was terrified of contacting and interviewing with attorneys. A few probing questions got to the heart of the fear. “I’ve spent 30 years being invisible at the hospital with no one listening to me or respecting what I have to say about patients. Now I’m supposed to walk into an attorney’s office and suddenly feel good about selling myself.”

Where There’s Smoke – Certified Legal Nurse Consultants Can Catch Fire

Even though it’s been a long time since I’ve been in a hospital for any reason other than to visit friends and family, my ICU habits are firmly in place. That makes me the company ICU nurse. In the ICU I learned that you don’t just wait for the patient to crump and then call for the crash cart. By then it’s too late. Instead, you look for the early signs of circling the drain and act on them.

Don’t Make Me Repeat Myself – Again!

ICU nurses are good at a lot of things – one of which is giving orders in times of crisis. That ability has helped me feel quite at ease giving directives as the CEO of my legal nurse consulting business. I hire and prefer people who are comfortable with disagreeing with me. I do not like working with, nor does LegalNurse.com benefit from “yes” people. But once a decision is final my staff is also great at not making me repeat myself. Of course no decision is ever final until they’ve all had their say. Then it’s really final.

Is There Such a Thing as Too Much Foreplay for Certified Legal Nurse Consultants?

Everybody loves a little, or a lot of, foreplay – just not when they’re really busy. Attorneys are crazy busy and for them, time is money. That means if you’re a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant who can skip some of the foreplay, all the build-up, set-up and sucking up and just get down to business, attorneys will appreciate you all the more.

Get right to the heart of the matter, cut to the chase and give your attorney-clients the facts, your opinions and your recommendations on where to go next. Save the foreplay for the person who will appreciate it most.

Success Is Inside!

P.S. Comment and share how you get down to business with your attorney-clients.

You Can Take Them Out – But You Better Dress Them Up First

I attended a business function for one of our vendors and the dress code was “business casual,” a variable term here in Houston. The owner of the company who was sponsoring the event was there with his wife – both dressed in “Neiman’s casual.” Several employees of the company were also there, dressed in “Nordstrom’s casual.” About the middle of the evening, the son of the owner, who also works for the company and will probably one day own it, turned up in “college casual.” You can guess what that looked like.
