Becoming a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant is an exciting process, but it can also be daunting, so I’ve asked the CLNC® Pros to share the first steps you should take when starting your CLNC business.
Thank you all for the warm wishes on the next part of my grand adventure (Mt. Everest here I come!). Reading, and re-reading, all your wonderful messages warmed my heart. I do, however, see a common thread that I have to mention, and that is how many Certified Legal Nurse Consultants sent their messages from personal email addresses.
Sunday was the Houston Marathon. I always joke that, “you couldn’t pay me to run a marathon.” But, there are people who get paid to do just that. Marathon running can seem like a lonely sport, but not all marathon runners run alone. They hire subcontractors (at least the ones who win enough races to be able to afford them)!
Dreams, like angels, can lift us up high above the world, taking us away from the daily grind. And that’s exactly what New Year’s resolutions are designed to help us do – lift us off the ground and guide us to a dream or goal.
Look around. There isn’t a retail clerk, flight attendant or restaurant server that doesn’t have a phone in their hands or within arm’s reach. There’s probably also a nurse or two. I’m just as guilty and am increasingly feeling chained to this device. To top it off, I’ve added the Apple® Watch this year only to find that the pull this tiny device has over me is more powerful than I’d like to admit.
I recently mentored a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant, Mary, who had been working as a subcontractor for another CLNC® consultant, Joan. Mary was subcontracting for Joan on a large volume of cases for one of Joan’s attorney-clients. When that attorney suddenly decided to retire, Mary was just as suddenly out of a subcontracting job and in a panic about what to do.
Working as a CLNC® subcontractor is a great way to consult on medical-related cases without having to market to attorney-clients. You get to focus more on case analysis and less on managing a business. It’s also an opportunity to gain experience and to expand your confidence as a new Certified Legal Nurse Consultant.

Many CLNC® consultants try to do everything themselves because they feel no one can provide the CLNC services and high quality work product to their attorney-clients the way they do. That’s what I thought when I first started my legal nurse consulting business and, it’s true.
