Not Reaching Your Goal for Legal Nurse Consulting Success? These 4 Reasons Might Be the Why

To be your most successful, all aspects of your life have to be congruent with your values and goals. I get to meet and talk with RNs from all over the US. One common complaint they share is exhaustion from 12-hour shifts. Long shifts combined with few to no breaks create a poor environment for planning healthy meals and exercise.

No wonder the very profession that promotes health is constantly fighting its own demons. It’s not surprising that so many RNs in hospital jobs suffer from back pain, fatigue and weight issues just to name a few. So with all of these elements conspiring against you, how do you muster the energy to go home and work on building a part-time legal nurse consulting business?

Use my four step program to get on the road to congruency and success. This isn’t a plan that you can accomplish in an hour, day or week. To be effective you have to give each step at least 7-10 days for the step to become a habit. After you’ve mastered the first step, move on to the next one. You can also work on a single aspect of two or more steps at once.

  1. Eat real food. Make small changes in your diet to move toward real food. Eliminate simple vices one at a time. Yes, this includes skinny lattes, sugar, fried foods, anything that comes in a package and especially any processed food that contains added chemicals (whether or not you can pronounce them). As you gain renewed energy, eating clean will no longer feel like a diet or sacrifice. It becomes a lifestyle.
  2. Move it. Moving your body energizes you. Squeeze in a 10-20 minute walk several times a day. If you have an Apple® Watch or Fitbit® set a daily activity goal and continue to increase it. 5,000 steps a day isn’t exercise, it’s an invitation to a nursing home. But if it’s been a while since you’ve moved it 5,000 is better than 3,000. Tom and I walk through our neighborhood after dinner every night. Breathing fresh air, spotting a hawk circling the sky, hearing the breeze blowing through the trees and the sounds of the kids at soccer practice is much more renewing than plopping down on the couch and watching Netflix® or falling into that black hole called social media. Use your Apple Watch to monitor your activity. Remember, what gets watched counts for nothing. What gets measured gets done.
  3. Sleep it off. Nothing is more demotivating for new career goals than fatigue from lack of sleep. Nurses chronically suffer from sleep deprivation. It’s part of the job description. But you have more control over your sleep than you think. Binging on a favorite TV show takes you one step further from starting your part time legal nurse consulting business. Is there really any joy in waking up tired and having to face another day because you stayed up late watching Season 5 of Poldark? (Okay, maybe there is 😊) Use your TV time as a reward for working on goals instead of an escape from day-to-day life. Get a good night’s sleep and it will transform your world.
  4. Live for fun. Not only is life meant to be lived, we need fun in our lives to fully live it. Fun helps us show up every day and do what needs to be done to achieve new career goals. As we add layers of responsibility to our lives, fun is often the first thing we throw out the window. Yes, fun can be spontaneous, but if you wait for it to appear you’ll just keep on doing what you’re doing. You have to schedule fun just like you would schedule a meeting with an attorney-client. Then, make sure you’re present in the moment to ensure you’re fully enjoying it. Having fun is also a lot easier when you, yourself, are fun. It’s important to take yourself and your new legal nurse consulting business seriously, but life is much more fun when you take yourself lightly.

One Certified Legal Nurse Consultant confessed that it took 37 years to figure out how lack of congruency was keeping her in an unsatisfying hospital job. When she created congruency in all realms of her life, only then did she have the energy to pursue a part time legal nurse consulting business and success, health and happiness soon followed.

What about you? Take a moment to write out where your life has fallen out of congruency and the steps you will to take to get it back.
