Mick Jagger famously sang “You can’t always get what you want. But… sometimes you get what you need.” I’ve found that to be true, but I’ve also found there’s a corollary – we often get exactly what we put up with (sometimes over and over).
Henry Cloud put it succinctly, “You get what you tolerate.” This can apply to hospital administrators, attorney-clients and even family and friends if you let it.
The next time you get less than you expect from someone take a moment to gauge your reaction. Did you address the issue or did you just shrug your shoulders and walk away disappointed? If you consistently do the latter you’ll continue to get exactly what you tolerate and not much more. When I decided I had tolerated enough from my RN job at the hospital, I quit and started my legal nurse consulting business.
Henry Cloud was writing about marriage when he created this quote – but he certainly knows people and you can apply his thought to just about anyone or any job (even yours).
Success Is Yours,
P.S. Comment and share what you’re tolerating that you shouldn’t.
