Today we’re in Philipsburg, St. Maarten. This is sort of a schizophrenic country (so the psych nurses onboard will be enthused). The island is a mix of two cultures, the Dutch and the French. If you can imagine wooden shoes and baguettes – well let’s just say you’ve got a better imagination than I do.
Truly though, this is best described as the French Riviera of the Caribbean. It’s also the home of the Stars and Stripes, one of the most famous sailboats in the world – more on that in a minute.
Last time we were here Tom and I spent the day in the thrall of tropical drinks and steel-drum bands. This year though I think we’ll try something different and more challenging – like different tropical drinks and different steel-drum bands. If you’ve never relaxed under a beach umbrella with your feet buried in the sand while holding a brightly-colored drink topped by a paper umbrella and listening to the sounds of surf and steel drums – well you’ve just not lived the life of a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant.
I’m sure the more foolhardy CLNC® consultants will head to the Sunset Beach Bar, the most famous airport/beach/bar in the world (and yes those three words go together) where you can literally be blown away by jetliners winding up for takeoff. It’s not my cup of healthy green tea, but I know some people are up for the thrill. If your idea of fun is hanging onto a chain-link fence while being blown horizontal by a 737, you can either go for it or maybe talk with one of the psych nurses onboard.
If you’re more competitive, I challenge you and the rest of the CLNC consultants to sign up for one of the sailboat races that leave from Bobby’s Marina. You’ll be on actual 12-metre racing sailboats, which are some of the fastest at sea. Every sailboat is a past America’s Cup contender and it makes for a thrilling afternoon – especially when your sailboat heels over and you have to hold on for dear life. Who knows, if the Stars and Stripes comes in first, it’s probably because I was up front trimming the main sail.
Success Is Yours!
P.S. See you ashore or wave to you from the ocean!
