Terminally Ill RN Redefines Labor Day for Certified Legal Nurse Consultants

Today is Labor Day and for most of us it’s a day off to picnic with our family, rest by the pool or do something else fun. For me it’s also about remembering a terminally ill registered nurse who attended the CLNC® Certification Seminar several years ago.

The CLNC student must have read the look on my face when she shared her personal story because she said, “Vickie, you’re probably wondering why I’m here. I want to learn every day I have left on this Earth and I want to have purpose in my life right up to the end.”

I struggled to choke back tears while hugging and embracing her. After all, here was a woman who had every reason to stay in bed with the covers pulled up over her head, feeling sorry for herself. Instead she was out living her life. She had a plan to fulfill one of her bucket list experiences – to become a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant. She wasn’t going down without a fight and intended to consult with attorneys in some capacity as long as she could.

Every Labor Day, this is the Certified Legal Nurse Consultant I’m most inspired by. Right up until the very end she was embracing all of life, including the labor of work and the labor of educating herself. And she was doing so without worrying about how long, short or successful her career as a CLNC consultant would be.

Labor is part of our lives. Whether you believe it’s for better or worse, the more we embrace labor, the happier we’ll be. That’s a secret this Certified Legal Nurse Consultant so generously shared with me three years ago.

I’m Just Sayin’

P.S. Comment and share whether you would work if you didn’t have to.

  1. Very touching…Yes, I would work if I did not have to. When you enjoy a profession, work doesn’t seem like work.

  2. I was once told “you’d be a nurse even if you didn’t get paid for it!” The comment was meant for a put down, but it brought home that being a nurse is part of your being if you are in nursing for the right reason. And this story gives me a new – wonderful insight into the time spent as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant. Thank you Vickie for sharing and getting my mind back on track! Have a blessed Labor Day! Nancy

  3. I can understand her attitude. I was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin’s in March of this year. I’m not going to quit living my life because I have cancer. I took your class to learn more because I have always wanted to do this. I am pursuing this dream of mine to be a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant and be my own boss. So why not do what you want and do not give up on your dreams. I say go for it. I did.

  4. That story is very inspiring as I progress through my journey. Thank you for sharing it!
    Hugs!

  5. Her actions, outlook on life and working with her body, are admirable. Currently in the position I’m employed, if I didn’t have to work, I would not; I would travel instead and learn and experience cultures and their world. My current goal is to pass the CLNC® Certification Exam after the class in October 2015 and put everything into my goal as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant; to feel passionate about what I do for a living, again.
