Tom’s Tech Tip: Fab Phablet or Fat Phablet? Only Certified Legal Nurse Consultants Know for Sure

I love my iPhone® and can’t wait to upgrade to the new iPhone 6. Based on backorders though, it’ll be late November or early December before I can get my hands on one. Most CLNC® consultants are probably suffering the same wait. But the burning question all my CLNC amigos have to ponder (while they wait) is whether we simply want a larger, faster iPhone (the screen on the iPhone 6 measures 4.7” diagonally versus the 4” iPhone 5s) or want the extra larger, faster iPhone 6 Plus, a so-called phablet (yes it’s a real word – Google it yourself) measuring in at 5.7” diagonally (slightly smaller than the 7.9” iPad® mini).

While reviews of these new phones are outstanding, speculation is rampant in the tech world regarding whether people really want a “plus size” phone. Of course the 5.1” Samsung® Galaxy® S5 has been selling like gluten-free hotcakes and the owners love them so “yes” is trending. That also seems to be the consensus of people with the iPhone 6 Plus.

But does a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant really need that large a device for their purse, pocket or briefcase? The answer depends upon two things. First, what other devices do you own? If you don’t already have a tablet (large or small) the iPhone 6 Plus would certainly fit that gap. You can easily read, do legal nurse consultant work and research on it. The Apple® phablet is more portable than the iPad mini (it may even kill off the mini) and has the added benefit of being a phone, not just a data consuming device. If you already own a tablet you might want to think twice before swapping your phone for another tablet.

The second is the simpler question of the two – can you easily transport something this size and are you willing to do so? As a guy, I like my iPhone because I can easily slip it into the pocket of my suit, jeans, jacket or car’s cup holder. You can’t easily do that with a phablet – as my friends with Galaxy phablets have found out. And, the more you carry something in your hands the more likely you are to set it down and lose it. As a female Certified Legal Nurse Consultant you might be able to slip your phablet into your purse – but how much weight will it add? Are you willing to carry that around all day, every day? And, unlike Apple products, we’re all not slim, svelte and cool (me included), but do we really want our phones to be “plus size?”

The choice is yours – phablet or phone? As Vickie says, I’m just askin’.

Keep on Techin’,

Tom
