Tom’s Tech Tip: Don’t Fall Off the (File) Path

If you’re anything like me, and you probably may be – even more than I am myself, you’ve lost an important document for your legal nurse consulting business somewhere on your computer. It could be misfiled in the wrong directory, somewhere on your “C” drive or just lost in cyberspace.

One way for Certified Legal Nurse Consultants to keep from losing that important CLNC® work-product or other document is to put the file path, that is its file name and location, at the bottom of the document or in the footer of the document. If you’re using Microsoft® Word you can quickly add the file path to a document by clicking on Insert, Quick Parts, Field, then select FileName and check the box next to Add path to filename.

This will insert the file path, which will look something like this:
C:\Users\Tom\Documents\TechTips\9-17 Tech Tip – File Path.docx

Now you’ll know where to look for your document should you lose it, or accidently save it into an incorrect directory or folder such as OtherDocs, BusinessPlans or some other working directory.

Another way to find, copy and paste the file path is to use either Windows Explorer or the File Open menu to navigate to the document’s location. Then, once you find your document, hold down your Shift key, right click on the file name then select Copy as path from the selection box.

This will copy the file path to your clipboard and you can then paste it into your document or if you’re sharing a document on a network, into an email so someone else can locate your legal nurse consulting work product. Now all my CLNC amigos will never fall off the (file) path again!

Keep on Techin’,

Tom

P.S. Comment here and share your favorite Windows® tip.
