Writing this blog I have to admit that I am partial to the ScanSnap series of document scanners. On my desk I have both a flatbed scanner and a ScanSnap s1500. I use the flatbed scanner for photographs and large-scale documents. However, you have to manually place each page face-down so it’s time consuming but renders high-quality scans. I use the ScanSnap for receipts and other documents. The amazing thing about the ScanSnap is that any CLNC® consultant can dump a 30+ page document into it, push the scan button and a few minutes later the entire document is scanned and ready to be emailed to an attorney-client.
All ScanSnaps can be set to automatically determine whether a document is single or double-sided, detect color or black and white, accept paper up to legal (8 ½” x 14”) size and are simply a breeze to use. They save each document in a .PDF format and load them into a directory of your choice, making them easy to locate, print or email. If Vickie and I are out of the office for an extended period (anything more than overnight), we travel with a ScanSnap and portable printer – but that’s another blog. Needless to say, the ScanSnap has revolutionized the way we handle paper at LegalNurse.com.
But, just when I thought I’d died and gone to scanner heaven, Fujitsu released the ScanSnap iX500 which is their new and improved version. My travel ScanSnap is over 7 years old (they are hardy) and I can’t wait for it to break so I can get the new one! The iX500 is wireless-compatible which will mean that I can scan to my iPad®, iPhone® or any computer within wireless range in the office. This eliminates the need for the scanner to be slaved to one computer. The scanning speed is faster and it can even automatically upload to the cloud (think Dropbox®). That upload ability will make sharing documents with your attorney-clients even easier.
If you need an ADF (automatic document feeder) scanner for your CLNC business, the ScanSnap iX500 is a worthy choice.
Keep on Techin’,
Tom
P.S. Comment and share what scanner you have and why you like it!
Tom,
Can you write a column about DropBox? I can use it, but it is a mystery to me how it works. Can you help me out with a simple tutorial? If you’ve already done this, my apologies, I’m new to the site. Hoping to get my CLNC® certification in September.
Thanks!
Jenny
Jenny,
The best way to learn to learn to use Dropbox is to go to Dropbox’s Help Center https://www.dropbox.com/help and read the FAQs and take the Tour at the bottom.
You’ll find it very intuitive.
Best,
Tom
