Spinner Dolphins Challenge the Attention Span of CLNC® Consultants

Tom and I were in the Maldives on a dolphin viewing cruise. I’ve seen dolphins at home and worked with dolphins at Sea World, but these are “Spinner” dolphins. Their eccentric behavior is to jump out of the water and spin in the air like an Olympic skater executing a triple Axel jump. Everyone was excited to be on the water and, needless to say, our expectations were high.

Suddenly, there we were, in a channel surrounded by more than 100 dolphins. You could see their white bellies as they swam just in front of the boat – surfing the pressure wave created by the bow. They splashed in the wake, made rolling turns and swam in tightly packed groups of 2-8. They did every type of dolphin behavior – except the one we came for – spinning.

I’ve never seen so many dolphins at one time. They moved so quickly, breaching the surface to breathe and then swimming off at an incredible rate of speed. I’m an amateur photographer. Point, click and hope for a good photo. After taking way too many pictures of dolphin tails and backs (they’re too fast to photograph without being able to anticipate their next move) I just stopped, turned off my camera and enjoyed the experience, the sights and sounds. After all, there was probably a greater chance that I’d fall overboard and get bitten by a dolphin than get that one-in-a-million spinning dolphin photo. Best to just enjoy the experience.

At one point I noticed that there were about eight people sitting on the boat deck talking or reading books. They were obviously disappointed that the dolphins were not behaving in the expected way, and since they weren’t going to get their spinning dolphin photo, they checked out on them.

Can you imagine being in a boat surrounded by a hundred dolphins and you’re bored simply because your expectations aren’t being met? It was all I could do to not say “People – we’re not in a zoo, these are wild animals! They’ll behave the way they want to behave. They’re not trained to do tricks just because you’re here.”

Life and your CLNC business are full of moments. Some are big (like getting brushed by a wild mountain gorilla or sitting in on a high-profile trial). Some are small (like seeing a butterfly or plowing through medical records).

As the boat accelerated to leave, I was facing aft and suddenly one dolphin leaped out of the water and did a gold-medal winning spin. It was unlike anything I’d ever seen before. The moment was over as quickly as it started and I was glad my camera was in my pocket so I could be in the moment. The people who were sitting down missed the big moment they’d come to see. It was almost as if the dolphin was rewarding those of us who hung in to experience the small moments by giving us a big one.

At the conclusion of my CLNC Certification Program I remind all new Certified Legal Nurse Consultants that this is their moment. How are you enjoying yours – both big and small?

  1. I have never seen a dolphin spin after the leap. However, I have seen dolphins follow our boat in the gulf and that is a beautiful sight to see. The boat I was on was from a Marine Biology camp when I was going through nursing school in Tennessee. The dolphins are so graceful when they leap and dive.

I enjoy doing something everyday for my CLNC® business as Vickie advises to do. Some days there is more to do than just one thing, but in the end it all adds up to success because it is inside me.
