I’ve always been opinionated, and I caught on fast that an RN job inside a hospital was no place for this mouthy, opinionated, New Orleans gal. Opinions helped me birth my legal nurse consulting business, grow the business and thrive in a business that I still love and enjoy 32 years later.
But one thing my legal nurse consulting business has taught me is the importance of evaluating and reevaluating the beliefs that generate our opinions. Belief precedes opinion and opinion precedes action.
I am an optimist at heart, so it’s always been easy to believe I have something valuable to offer attorneys and the clients they represent. That belief has always supported my opinions about what I am worth and those opinions have directly led to the action of never underpricing myself – something I remind RNs, Certified Legal Nurse Consultants and women entrepreneurs every chance I get.
All beliefs that lead to your CLNC® success in an authentic way should be honored. The rest, well it might be time to tell them, in Michael Jackson’s words, to “Beat it – just beat it.”

P.S. Comment and share how you use opinions in your CLNC business.
My opinions as a nurse have saved lives. Whether they (providers) wanted to hear them or not, I stuck to my guns. However, many times my opinions were not heard because it was not someone more significant who thought of it first.
For once in my career, I can breathe because my opinions now have value as a CLNC® consultant and that is what I get paid for. When I read your story Vickie, and you mentioned how opinionated you were, it made me think that this is true of myself too. It’s so sad that the healthcare industry views opinionated nurses as problematic and not an asset.
