What a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant Can Learn from Mardi Gras

New Orleans is in the thick of Mardi Gras with daily parades, parties and 500,000 King Cakes being devoured all leading up to Fat Tuesday on February 21. Mardi Gras is the feast before the fast; it’s the last gasp of fun before the famine of Lent – the ultimate expression of “eat your dessert first.” When I was a child growing up in New Orleans, my favorite part of Mardi Gras was floats full of masked people tossing out doubloons and the coveted Mardi Gras beads.

To get those treasures you must not only be focused, but also assertive and agile. First you have to make your way to the front of all the people crowding the curbs and streets during the parades. Then during that brief period as the motorized float passed by, amidst all the noise and distraction you have to focus your attention on one of the people throwing the beads and doubloons from that float and catch their eye. Maybe you assertively yell the traditional “Throw me something mister!” or holler something else; maybe you wave your arms. What matters is that they see you and agree the beads they’re holding in their hand are for you. Once they toss the coveted beads, you snatch them away from the grasping hands of all the other parade-goers – not an easy task when you’re only 5’2” tall. That’s when your agility comes in handy, allowing you to dart in or out to grab those beads or maybe stamp your foot onto a rolling doubloon before anyone else sees it. You need to be all in to get the prize.

It was only after leaving New Orleans and starting my legal nurse consulting business that I learned Mardi Gras parades are a metaphor for life. We all get to go to the parade – but if we just stand there and watch, the parade will pass us by and we’ll go home empty-handed. But, if we know what we want and take the necessary action to get what we want – we get to go home with the gold – or at least a handful of doubloons and beads.

Certified Legal Nurse Consultants all get to go to the parade of attorneys. Take a moment to decide what you want and then GO get it. It’s your turn to go home with the CLNC® gold.

Success Is Inside!

P.S. Comment and share a story of when you went for the gold and won it.

  1. Vickie, loved your analysis of Mardi Gras! Being even shorter than you, I understand how difficult it is to get the attention of the masked rider on the float who is also having trouble focusing while looking through his mask and trying maintain his balance on the moving float. But you are right, the right pair of beads is a great prize – even more priceless – is turning and placing them around the neck of a 2 year old toddler sitting in a ladder seat!
