Florence Nightingale 1861 Letters on Exhibit at 2010 National Alliance of Certified Legal Nurse Consultants (NACLNC®) Conference

Happy International Nurses Day! And, happy birthday to Florence Nightingale – today, May 12, is her birthday. She laid the foundation of professional nursing with the establishment, in 1860, of her nursing school at St. Thomas’s Hospital in London, the first secular nursing school in the world. The annual International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world on her birthday.

It is fitting that on this day we express our gratitude to our friends at Gannett Healthcare Group, publishers of Nursing Spectrum, NurseWeek and Nurse.com. We are honored that they joined us at our 2010 National Alliance for Legal Nurse Consultants (NACLNC®) Conference to share some original letters written by Florence Nightingale. These original letters, written in 1861, are truly national treasures and were on display during the NACLNC® Conference. It was truly fitting as 2010 is the centennial of her death and the International Year of the Nurse.

discusses Florence’s letters.

Photos taken at the Conference are shown here – it was an exceptional exhibit.

Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy to English parents and lived from 1820-1910, 90 years. She set the stage for us “to bring into the field a higher class of persons.” Follow this link to read more about this caring, strong-willed founder of modern nursing.

The exhibit melded well with our NACLNC® Conference theme: Take the Stage for Legendary CLNC® Success. The nurses in attendance were impressed, and also touched as they were reminded of the legendary example Florence Nightingale set for all of us.

Thanks again to our friends from Gannett Healthcare Group (Nursing Spectrum, NurseWeek and Nurse.com) for their generous sharing of this exhibit with all the Certified Legal Nurse Consultants at the 2010 NACLNC® Conference.

Nursing has such a rich history and this is one of those wonderful reminders of just how rich our history is. Happy Birthday, Florence!

Success Is Inside!

P.S. Comment and share what Florence Nightingale represents to you as a registered nurse.

  1. For many years I knew little about Florence Nightingale’s contributions to the nursing profession. My interest in this glorious woman was peaked after viewing a movie about her life several years ago in which Jacqueline Smith did a great job of playing the title role. I found it difficult to believe that Nurse Nightingale would have incurred such wrath as a result of her insistence that basic principles of hygiene be implemented within hospitals. The display at the NACLNC® Conference in Nashville reinforced to me just how much Florence Nightingale endured for the sake of improving patient care. As a nurse, reading her letters made me think “We’ve come a long way, baby!” Thanks to Gannett Healthcare Group for reminding us where we have come from and to the LegalNurse.com for helping us to get where we are going as Certified Legal Nurse Consultants!

  2. I can’t help but see a lot of similarities between Florence Nightingale’s drive to improve nursing as a profession, and Vickie’s drive to improve nursing’s profession! Each is a strong willed woman, unselfish, teacher, mentor, and the passion/mission to improve nursing “one nurse at a time”. They may have dealt with slightly different directions…but with similar visions, and have brought nursing to another wonderful, powerful, proud standard! Thanks to Gannett Healthcare Group for recognizing BOTH nursing icons in ONE place!! After all, I do believe that Florence would enthusiastically agree…”We are nurses, and we can do anything!” HAPPY NURSES WEEK AROUND THE WORLD!

  3. Happy Nurses’ Week to all of you. I had the privilege of viewing that wonderful exhibit in Nashville and felt very proud to be a part of that.
I have always wanted to be a nurse from early childhood and can’t imagine having done anything else. Florence Nightingale has left a legacy for future generations that will never die.
Now I am moving on in my career as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant and am equally proud.
Thank you to Gannett Healthcare Group for sharing.
Thank you, Vickie, for bringing this opportunity to us as well.
I have my nurse juices flowing again!!
As a student back in the 60’s we had The History of Nursing as a required
class. So, here is to Sara Gamp and all the rest who followed.

  4. I also viewed the Florence Nightingale Exhibit in Nashville. It was very inspiring and truly an honor to visit with Ray Riordan about the exhibit and Florence Nightingale’s life and contribution to nursing. I have read books but it was very moving for me to see letters written by her hand. Reminders about the individuals who have paved the way for us to succeed re-energizes our resolve to further our profession. Thank you to Gannett Healthcare Group and Vickie for bringing this piece history to the conference. Happy nurses’ week!!!
