What Certified Legal Nurse Consultants Can Learn from the Academy Awards® and Avatar

I think I must have been the last person in the world to see Avatar. Sunday, a week ago, Tom and I went with a large group of our friends (all of whom were seeing it for the second time) to see this movie. Everyone I knew who had seen it, raved about it (which seemed to be everyone I know) and I was so excited about seeing it that I even brought my own 3D glasses!

About an hour into the movie I turned to Tom, and after yanking the popcorn away from him, whispered, “If this doesn’t get Best Picture I’ll be shocked.” I loved the movie.

Last night, I watched the Academy Awards and was indeed shocked when Hurt Locker won Best Picture. In all fairness I never saw Hurt Locker and will have to add it to my list. Until then my vote is still Avatar. Not only was it entertaining, Certified Legal Nurse Consultants can learn several lessons from director, James Cameron. The lessons all stem from an opinion I feel strongly about after growing my successful legal nurse consulting business for 28 years – the experts are often wrong and you shouldn’t always listen to them!

Think about it. Hollywood experts said audiences won’t go see an intelligent movie; that they only want gross-out, teen-style comedies or star-driven vehicles where the star walks through his role in his sleep. Cameron ignored them and penned a movie that required your full attention and one that put its leading characters into unrecognizable avatars.

The experts say the attention span of audiences cap out after 80-90 minutes and that audiences won’t sit for a movie that runs 162 minutes caption-to-credit. Cameron ignored that line of thinking and cut the movie he wanted audiences to see. Again, the experts were wrong to the tune of over $2.5 billion worldwide!

Experts also believed that audiences weren’t ready for full-length 3D movies other than horror, children’s or the occasional IMAX® film. Instead of following that thinking, Cameron went out on a limb and filmed the movie in 3D applying it tastefully, without cheap shock effects. This has turned out to be one of the most popular methods to see Avatar.

Like I’ve always told CLNC® consultants, you can’t always listen to the experts because they’re often wrong. Like James Cameron you have to make your own decisions and follow your own dreams. Like James Cameron, your CLNC® business may not win a coveted Academy Award, but there’s nothing holding you back from trying, except the experts.

See you in the theaters!

  1. I too loved Avatar. I really didn’t have any desire to see it, but one free weekend and trying to find a movie that both my husband (who loves sci-fi) would like and could be equally enjoyed by my granddaughter, meant that the pickens were slim. So we all agreed on Avatar. Wow! Everyone loved it!

I also loved Hurt Locker (although this definitely isn’t one for young kiddies), but as the mother of a soldier and a marine, seeing what our young military service men and women are willing to sacrifice for our country always inspires me to be a better American and to appreciate our freedoms.

  2. Hi,
I saw Avatar and didn’t care for it – Yes, the visuals were breathtaking and the color – WOW! But, the story line was the same ol thing. The plot wasn’t new – it was a Western in different clothes – it was good vs evil. Greed vs nature.
I saw the Hurt Locker and thought it was a gripping story that had me on the edge of my seat many time. At the end, I found myself saying – how many times a day does this action go on? How many times do our young men not only get physically damaged BUT how many more are psychologically damaged? After 1 tour – after 2 tours – after 3 tours, how can any of them come back to “a normal” life style w/o needing some type of counseling? It was very sad…….
I also saw the Blind Side. I thought this was one of the most inspirational stories I’ve seen in a long while! It made you laugh, cry and laugh again! It showed the huge heart of a family to help someone not so fortunate. And, if given the love, support and means – someone who has had very little education can overcome anything and become a success.
That is something all new-start LNC’s should remember – sometimes the odds seem tough but w/ good support and perseverance – you can overcome anything and be wildly successful!!

  3. Hey Vickie,

I have not seen Avatar yet but have heard good things about it. I will probably wait until it is on DVD, I don’t get out much! I did watch the Oscars’ though I was not suprised to find that I was not firmiliar with any of the nominated movies. Gee whiz makes me wonder what I do all day! Maybe that is how I will reward myself when I get an account with a firm, I will go to the movies. Got to take baby steps.

  4. My fiance and I took our 2 boys to go see Avatar and we absolutely loved it. Not quite the movie for our younger daughter. I think she would have been scared with some of the “critters.” I think the thought behind the movie was exceptional and the graphics were great.

  5. Hi! I have seen Avatar, twice. The beauty of the colors in the movie, the different types of scenery, all came from imagination! As in the movie, opening ones- self to others way- of- life only broadens insight and increases tolerance. This can also add to knowledge of different ways of coping, in our lives. Now more than ever, individuals need to be reminded this, as it is a subject that never gets old.

  6. I saw Avatar with my husband and son and we all enjoyed it. I thought it was a great movie.

  7. Hi Vickie:

Just so you don’t feel like you were the last one to see Avatar. My parents, boyfriend and I just saw the movie last week. My children had already seen it at least twice already. I thought the movie was awesome. It kept my interest the whole time and I didn’t want to leave my seat for nothing.
