No Such Thing as Bad Clothing for Certified Legal Nurse Consultants

I just got back from four wonderfully luxurious days sitting on a beach in Mexico with nothing more on my mind than my stack of novels. You’d think that for a woman who grew up in New Orleans, in a home that didn’t have air conditioning, I’d only like warm weather places like beaches or jungles. Surprisingly it’s exactly the opposite! Many of my favorite travels have taken me to colder climates.

I’ve been snow-shoeing in the high Rockies, explored Iceland, the Antarctic, the Arctic (600 miles from the North Pole), trekked the Everest and Annapurna sides of Nepal and stood among prayer flags on a 13,000-foot high mountain pass looking across Bhutan’s Haa Valley and the Himalayas into Tibet.

Standing in rushing water up to my waist while fly-fishing in a Canadian river in a cold drenching rain, I remarked to one of the fishing guides about the weather. His reply was, “There is no such thing as bad weather, there’s just bad clothing.”

If you plan to go somewhere or start something big, whether it’s a vacation or a legal nurse consulting business, you need to be sure that you’ve completed all the necessary preparations. You need to dress yourself and your CLNC® business appropriately if you want to enjoy success. Just like you can dress badly for an outdoor event, you can also dress your legal nurse consulting business badly with poorly designed marketing materials, an unprofessional-looking website and unclear communications with attorney-prospects.

As a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant, you need to always dress yourself and your business for success. Today, as you begin your day, I’d like to know what clothing you’re planning to wear for your legal nurse consulting business.

  1. How uncannily appropriate this subject is for me this week. I have scheduled a group of “cold calls” and current-client visits for two “out-of-office” days and the what-to-wear conundrum was a real problem. That is, until I stopped in to a local “nearly new” (church sponsored) shop on Saturday. I found three (!) Pendleton suits (a camel, a gray and an almost-navy blue – skirts and blazer like jackets) – talk about confidence boosting !
    I’m not a label-junky, but classic Pendleton is a (for me) no-brainer in the dressing-for-success ‘rules.’ Simple mid-heel pumps and a Coach shoulder bag and a (nearly) matching leather soft-sided brief case (also “gently used”) stuffed with token holiday gifts for each attorney (and/or staff) completes the outfit. (I also have 2 copies of my website newsletter and a list of 10 presentations I will offer to provide their office at a time convenient for them. (My Christmas wish for me? More Clients!!)

  2. My first attorney-client interview was just a few weeks ago. I was so excited and realized the day before the meeting that my suit was appropriate for summer, but not for November–even though I live in Florida. I ran out and bought a “winter suit” complete with matching shoes. I knew I looked great! Imagine my surprise when the attorney-client and her partner were both dressed in jeans and sweatshirts! I left the office with a case, and confidence that I had made a good impression. Was it the suit? or was it my presentation? I like to think it was both!
