“Certified Legal Nurse Consulting Is Recession Proof. I’m Busier Than Ever!” – An Interview with Dale Barnes – Part 3

Read Part 1. Read Part 2.

How has your income level changed in this economy?

Dale: Vickie, I’m proud to say that last year I was a little ahead with my legal nurse consulting business compared to the prior year – which is saying something when so many other types of businesses experienced a downturn. I’m going to be away for most of January, on a trip to East Africa. People are amazed that I can afford to leave my business during this economy.

Every attorney I have a case with or who I am on the verge of getting a case from will have a contact number to call me directly, if I’m needed. I also have someone for them to call if they need a live body to take care of something while I’m gone. And I’ll be in contact with everyone by email. I’ll never disappear so that a client can’t find me, which gives them a level of comfort yet doesn’t keep me anchored to my desk. That’s one of the joys of being a CLNC® consultant.

Do you still love being a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant as much as you did in the beginning?

Dale: More. I’m 60 years old and I can’t imagine ever retiring. Every case is different. Every situation is different. People often ask me what a typical day is like. There isn’t one – and that’s what I love about what I do. I feel like Columbo putting the pieces together in a puzzle that deserves my special kind of CLNC® expertise, and it’s fun.

I think being a CLNC® consultant is the best of all worlds for RNs. We get to use our nursing experience and expertise, we get to use our brains and we also get to be independent. We interact with people who appreciate us – working with attorneys is much better than working with physicians. Attorneys think we’re terrific.

Any CLNC® consultant who is feeling bombarded by bad news in the media should just ignore the economy and keep doing what they’ve been taught by LegalNurse.com. The legal nurse business is out there, perhaps more than ever before. Attorneys need us, perhaps more than ever. Keep marketing, keep the lines of communication open and you’ll get where you want to be.

Success Is Inside!

  1. Vickie, your CLNC® Certification Program is wonderful. It is especially wonderful for those of us who are getting a little tired of the everyday routine of our lives in nursing and perhaps just a wee bit older. It has added spark to my life as an older nurse! What an exciting way to continue in our field of interest and contribute to the lives of others in yet a different way.

I began your home-study program with great trepidation. I am in my mid-sixties with over thirty years experience in the medical field. I’ve worked in the areas of pediatrics, geriatrics, home health and psychiatry. I often felt as if I had “ants in my pants” and was itching to find something else to do. As a director of nursing of a 187-bed nursing home, the long hours were getting to this Ol’ Gal! I was working with the Attorney General’s office in Tennessee on a nursing home case and he asked me if I had ever thought of working for a lawyer. I honestly thought he had lost his mind! I laughed, and he said, “No Cathie, I’m not kidding you. Isn’t there some way that you could be a nurse helping with medical issues in a law office?” Well, I investigated and found your home-study program.

I have taken your course, passing by the skin of my teeth. My knees were actually knocking together when I completed the test. Finally, after the first of the year I put a letter together. Then I called a law office and talked to a lawyer who I had met at the Attorney General’s office. Oh my gosh, Vickie! I have work immediately! I have never been so amazed. It is even a high-profile case. He was so excited, he was ready to give my name to every lawyer he knew!

So Vickie, I am still in a state of shock! I know I am going to love this career. Here I am, an “Ol’ Lady” and ready to head out the door to begin a new career. Thank you so much. If you need a geriatric CLNC® spokesperson, just give me a call.

Guess I am going to have to get a new e-mail address, [email protected] doesn’t seem to fit the bill anymore. Hats off to you, Vickie!
