A Day in the Life of Certified Legal Nurse Consultant Shequita Moore
by Shequita Moore, MSN, RN, LNFA, CLNC
A typical day as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant is fun, rewarding and filled with self-fulfillment. It is my definition of the “dream job”.
My career as a CLNC® consultant has changed my life in many positive ways. I begin each day with a positive quote, reflecting on its meaning to me and impact on my life. I review positives and challenges of the prior week and assess the interventions implemented to overcome those challenges. I identify any outstanding tasks and set weekly goals, including family time. In my previous healthcare positions, I worked extreme hours seven days a week and was on call 24/7. The flexibility and autonomy of working from home is like a breath of fresh air.
After this brief positive reflection and goal-setting time, I sit on the balcony and enjoy a fresh cup of coffee. I check email to ensure there are no messages requiring follow-up from attorney-clients. I review my calendar and assess my progress on the cases I’m actively working on. If I’m completing a case screening, I maintain a steady, focused pace finding an appropriate stopping point throughout the day. If I’m writing a report, I reflect on the key aspects of the case, considering critical points. I then transition into investigative mode, jotting down multiple ideas and reviewing them for relevance and support in the case development.
During the day I take a short break to participate in something fun, giving my brain a rest. Sometimes I take a walk in the neighborhood or listen to soft music. I occasionally work in the evening or around my 5-year-old son’s schedule. I am blessed to have a career as a CLNC consultant, providing the flexibility to spend additional time with my child, taking him to the park or reviewing learning modules together.
Next, I work on any additional CLNC services such as locating testifying experts, making calls, organizing and paginating medical records and assisting with deposition questions. At midday, I recheck email for any additional correspondence and required follow-up. I organize and calendar any additional CLNC services. Occasionally, I complete business tasks, such as ordering marketing materials or making bank deposits.
Lastly, I prepare for upcoming case reviews and proofread final reports for the last time. I practice how I will present the case to ensure clarity and smooth flow. I anticipate potential questions to ensure that my responses are clear and factual. Often, I have an “Aha” moment late at night and drift into deep thought. These thoughts lead to important insights to support the case. The next day, I investigate the thoughts further and incorporate the relevant ones into the case. My career as a CLNC consultant is an incredible opportunity to both utilize my nursing expertise and experience self-fulfillment. I look forward to many more years of practice.
