Certified Legal Nurse Consultants know they have a good thing going and enjoy their private club. Because they consult with law firms and insurance companies, you won’t meet them in the hospital setting and may not even have met one at all.

When I talk to RNs I’m frequently surprised to learn they have misconceptions about legal nurse consulting. Misconceptions such as “There is no certification for beginners” or “Attorneys in my area don’t pay $150/hour” or “You don’t need training to get started.” In my upcoming free Webinar “10 Common Misconceptions About Legal Nurse Consulting” I’ll bust the most common misconceptions and more.

If there’s anything holding you back from taking the next steps necessary to become a CLNC® consultant, attend this Webinar and you’ll be able to judge for yourself whether legal nurse consulting is the right career move for you. This is your chance to ask me anything you want.

As the pioneer of legal nurse consulting I created this nursing specialty in 1982. You can trust me to give you straightforward answers. For 35 years I’ve been training successful Certified Legal Nurse Consultants, so I have no local attorney-market to protect and no competitors to fear. I only want to help you decide whether or not legal nurse consulting is right for you.

Emotional News for All Nurses

October 17, 2014 — This week I was asked to go on national television to discuss the alarming impact Ebola has placed on the already dangerous levels of stress among RNs. I appeared on “The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson” on FOX NEWS, “Street Smart” on Bloomberg TV and FOX Business Network’s “Varney & Co.” show.

I’m honored to have had the opportunity to speak on behalf of the front-line nurses and their concerns over lack of Ebola preparedness. Unfortunately RNs are reporting that in some healthcare facilities it’s business as usual – nurses are not getting the training and appropriate PPE for treating Ebola patients.

Here’s the video of my interview on “The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson” on FOX NEWS regarding hospitals’ lack of preparedness.

Here’s the video of my interview on the “Varney & Co.” show on FOX Business Network regarding a nurse’s right to refuse to treat Ebola patients.

I pray that RNs stay safe and that you receive what you need to deliver the nursing care you are so good at.

Success Magazine Focused on Vickie’s Feel-Good Addictions and How to Find More Time for Success

Deborah Huso from Success Magazine interviewed Vickie about the tasks she calls feel-good addictions.

In her latest book, The New York Times bestseller Wicked Success Is Inside Every Woman, Vickie talks about how easy it is to get caught up in these addictions while delaying work on the big projects that actually advance careers and goals. Vickie says. “It feels good to empty your inbox, but you’re not going to get a promotion for it.”

“Always work on something big,” Vickie advises Success Magazine readers. “Usually, it’s the big stuff that gives us long-term success and fuels our passion. The to-do list will never disappear, so make progress on what matters most.”

This is just one of the strategies in her book, already in its second printing, that women can put to use immediately to reach their career dreams.

Vickie L. Milazzo Participates at the Second Annual Women’s Employment Summit

American Intercontinental University hosted a panel discussion on April 7, 2011, where local CEOs and business owners took questions from an engaged audience of students from all disciplines. Vickie L. Milazzo, founder and CEO of Vickie Milazzo Institute, joined Sue Burnett, founder and president of Burnett Staffing Specialists, Jeannie Bollinger, president and CEO of the Houston West Chamber of Commerce, and several other key business leaders in a presentation that covered the personal as well as the practical aspects of sustaining a business during a recession. The panelists first addressed the topic “Is the Recession Actually Over and How Has It Affected Middle Class America?“, then took questions from the audience.

“I was thrilled to participate in this event because I love working with young people,” said Milazzo, who started her multimillion dollar company 29 years ago with $100 in her bank account. “It’s so important to encourage their optimism and enthusiasm for their dreams, while at the same time offer a dose of reality about what it takes to be successful.”

Milazzo encouraged the audience not to be discouraged by challenging economic conditions. “Now is the time to start a business”, she said, noting that the economic recoveries are usually fueled primarily by the growth of small businesses.

Featured on KHOU’s Great Day, the Women’s Employment Summit is an annual event hosted by AIU in Houston.

Vickie Milazzo and Legal Nurse Consulting in The News-Star

Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD was recently interviewed by The News-Star in Monroe, Louisiana, about her success as the industry leader and pioneer of legal nurse consulting. The News-Star states that “Legal nurse consulting is a rising new career field that blends medical and legal expertise.” They further say that “The increasing number of lawsuits related to injury and healthcare has fueled demand for such consultants to help lawyers interpret most anything from medical charts to health insurance claims.”

They also quote Monroe attorney Jeff Guerriero who has a full-time legal nurse consultant on staff as saying: “(lawyers) are not all that good with medical jargon. (Consultants) come in handy because they help with that.”

Guerriero also said that legal nurse consultants can assist attorneys with whether or not a case has merit – one of the contingents cited by Vickie. This one service – recommending to the attorney that a case is meritorious – that Certified Legal Nurse Consultants provide to their attorney-clients saves potentially millions of dollars per year.

Guerriero said when he is presented with a medical malpractice case, he could end up with two or three thousand pages of material. He said the consultant can simplify it for him.

“My consultant could come back with a seven page outline,” Guerriero said. “It’s very helpful.”

The Doctor Didn’t Say, “It’s a Little Entrepreneur!” – Houston Business Journal Interview

Vickie Milazzo in Houston Business JournalCasey Wooten with the Houston Business Journal* interviewed me for his business strategies article, “Nursing Ambition: Vickie Milazzo Founded an Industry Training Registered Nurses to Be Legal Consultants.” I want to share a few excerpts from the article that can help you develop and grow your CLNC® business.

Overcoming the Fear of Starting a Business

I had to overcome my fear of quitting my hospital job.

“I knew I wanted to start my own business and, at the time, I was earning about $28,000 as a registered nurse. I didn’t have ‘entrepreneurial’ written on my forehead because I didn’t have any business training. But, also, I didn’t have a whole lot to lose.”

Prioritizing a Budget

My company’s growth was self-financed so prioritizing my budget was key to my success.

“I really lived beneath my income. Working out of my home with $1 million in revenue is a good example of that. That’s why I was able to grow the business. You must be more concerned with growing the business than with growing your closet or growing your car collection.”

Ignoring the Naysayers

“There were naysayers along the way but any good entrepreneur knows never to pay attention to detractors.”

Enjoying Success

“You don’t have to give up your life. Even though my business is successful, every year I take off between 10 and 12 weeks for vacation; not calling in or checking email – really disconnected. That allows me, when I come home, to have that fire – to really still be excited about my business. After 29 years, to still be excited – that’s success. The most important thing for me is having fun both on and off the job.”

*Houston Business Journal has named Vickie Milazzo Institute as one of Houston’s Top 25 Woman-Owned Businesses, Top 50 Fastest Growing Woman-Owned Business, Top 10 Woman-Owned Businesses Ranked by Largest Percentage of Revenue Growth and Top 100 Small Businesses.

Please join me as I interview with Yolanda McIntosh, host of Mo2vational Moments on WomensRadio.com. Yolanda’s program is designed to encourage, empower and inspire, and she accomplishes this goal by inviting authors to encourage the lives of her listeners.

My interview with Yolanda was based on my Wall Street Journal bestselling book, Inside Every Woman – Using the 10 Strengths You Didn’t Know You Had to Get the Career and Life You Want Now. A few of the highlights from the interview are provided below.

Harness 10 Strengths to Achieve Your Dreams. Yolanda was very curious about whether the 10 Strengths I write about in my book are really as powerful as I say they are. Absolutely yes – we all have these forces within us, but most of us see ourselves as only having one or two strengths or we’re so overwhelmed by life that we just use one or two. If you can harness all 10 strengths, you can then accomplish your dreams, not just everybody else’s. The 10 strengths I harness every day got me from being an RN earning $28,000 a year to the owner of an Inc. Top 5000 Private Company. I believe they can be that powerful for you too.

Make 5 Promises to Guarantee Your Success

I will live and work a passionate life is my number one promise. One of the reasons why I was motivated to start my own business was because I saw a lot of nurses who were no longer passionate about what they were doing and I realized that I needed to do something for my nursing future before I became disgruntled and unhappy. That’s why I decided to start my legal nurse consulting business – to do something that I would love and be passionate about every day of every week.

What’s the secret to success? Many people think success is all about IQ, experience and luck, and that’s definitely not true. The people who succeed are the people who have the intention to succeed. They back that intention up by going for it and taking action every day. They don’t wait for conditions to be perfect and they’re not waiting for the guarantee of success. They go for it no matter what. That’s what it’s really about – you have to put the action behind the dream.

NPR Broadcast Receives Rave Reviews

Thank you for your generous and encouraging responses to “Stepping Out of Fear,” my recent broadcast on National Public Radio (NPR). I especially enjoyed learning what my essay meant to you.

If you missed my NPR appearance on Labor Day, I invite you to click here now to listen (or read). You’ll hear me talk about “stepping out” to realize a life of fulfillment – a topic that may speak to you. I learned from my own struggles with fear. Bad things can happen when we step out, but I believe worse things can happen to our soul when we don’t.

The essay aired on This I Believe, a feature of NPR’s national news program All Things Considered. Contributors to This I Believe include Colin Powell, Gloria Steinem, Helen Keller and Bill Gates. You can imagine how honored and humbled I felt to be invited to join this esteemed group and share my beliefs with 26 million Americans.

Equally exciting was learning that my essay was the #2 link emailed from the NPR home page. This tells me that many people are fearful about stepping out. Perhaps you know someone who needs encouragement to step out and realize a new dream. If so, please forward this email to them.

To read two of the responses I received, see below. Click here to read or listen to “Stepping Out of Fear.”

Success Is Inside!

Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD
Pioneer of Legal Nurse Consulting

Dear Vickie,

I was pleasantly surprised to hear your essay this past Monday on NPR’s This I Believe segment. I tuned in midway through the broadcast, but I recognized your voice immediately. I guess my week in Houston six years ago left your tones indelibly marked in my brain. The message, however, was the same – all is possible if you believe in yourself and are willing to take the risk. I heard the entire essay repeated later the same day, and I was very proud to know you, to be an RN and to be a CLNC® Consultant. You did an outstanding job.

– Julie Burgett, RN, MSN, CNRN, CLNC, Ohio

Vickie,

BRAVO! You did a super job on NPR on Labor Day. I am not only proud of you, but proud to know you. Thank you for being such a great mentor.

– Ann Wiseman, RN, CLNC, Maryland

Legal Nurse Consulting Ranks in the Top 10 Hottest Jobs

CareerBuilder has ranked the career of legal nurse consulting as one of the Top 10 Hottest Jobs. CareerBuilder is the nation’s leading recruitment resource with over 26 million users.

The list of the 10 hottest jobs was based on Bureau of Labor Statistics studies. CareerBuilder factored demographic shifts, business trends and consumer behavior into determining which careers will be the next big thing and which are history.

When I pioneered the field of legal nurse consulting 24 years ago, I never dreamed that this profession would explode the way it has. It’s rewarding to know that thousands of nurses I’ve trained have transformed their lives through this new nursing specialty. I hope more nurses follow this “hot” career to realize their dreams of financial independence and fulfillment.

NurseZone.com Spotlights Vickie and the Legal Nurse Consulting Profession

NurseZone.com recently interviewed Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD for an article that shines a spotlight on her as the pioneer of the legal nurse consulting profession. In the article, “Vickie Milazzo Inspires Nurses to Go for Their Goals,” Vickie describes her success story, the motivating factors and how nursing prepared and trained her to own a business.

Vickie now inspires other nurses to go for their dream of doing something different with their nursing expertise. “A dream can make a person miserable…. Going for the dream, taking action on it…and going for it all the way is what makes people happy,” Vickie says.

She believes nurses can do anything! “Nurses are the most action-oriented people I know. We are decisive, quick on our feet. The thing that got me through those first interviews [with attorneys] was recognizing I was a nurse and had…saved people’s lives.”

Vickie offers encouraging words of wisdom about starting a new career as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant: “That first case I worked on, everything fit like a glove, and that experience validated that attorneys did need nurses. Anyone can be trained to read medical terminology, but you have to have been there on the inside to understand and read between the lines in medical charts.” That’s what Certified Legal Nurse Consultants do for attorneys – read between the lines.

I Bare All in My Interview as a Featured Author on BookSisters.com

BookSisters.com recently interviewed me for their website featuring my book, Inside Every Woman: Using the 10 Strengths You Didn’t Know You Had to Get the Career and Life You Want Now.

I was quite candid with them when they asked about the 5 Promises that I make to myself daily and discussed in my book:

“I discovered [the 5 Promises] because I had been a registered nurse for about six years and I was unsatisfied with the direction that my career was taking. I knew I was going to have to do something different if I wanted my life and my career to change. So, I started making some promises to myself that I knew I would have to make to get to a different life. For example, let’s take I will go for it or reject it outright,’ which is promise number two. I had been around so many other registered nurses who wanted to do something different, or they had a good idea, but they didn’t go for it. So, I knew if I was going to get from point A to point B, I would have to go for it all the way, or just reject it altogether, but not that one day, some day, I’ll get around to living my career dream.’ My promises were prompted by where I was, where I wanted to go, and how I was going to get there.”

A CLNC® Consultant’s Work Product Results in a $6-Million Settlement

My article titled “Legal Nurse Turns Case Around” was published in the March 26, 2007 issue of NurseWeek/Nursing Spectrum magazine. This article illustrates how a little boy, Ted F., received a $6-million settlement because of the expertise of a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant.

Ted suffered extensive nerve damage due to a dog bite, and the article discusses his subsequent negligent medical care. You will learn how a CLNC® consultant’s “line-by-line review of the medical records helped the attorney understand the long-term effects of Ted’s injuries and revealed the missing medical documentation. Ted’s future care would be extensive and costly. The report helped the attorney build a more compelling case to present to the insurance company.”

But the Certified Legal Nurse Consultant didn’t stop with her expert case review. At the CLNC® consultant’s suggestion, Ted’s physician at the second hospital ordered a nerve study to evaluate the existence and extent of nerve damage. The attorney wouldn’t have had this crucial piece of evidence without her expert eye on the case.

Dale Barnes, RN, CLNC, is the consultant who reviewed Ted’s case. She said that making a difference like this was what got her into nursing in the first place. Her role in winning the $6-million settlement demonstrates how important the CLNC® consultant’s input can be in creating a successful outcome.

Vickie Shares One of Her Biggest Mistakes with Investors Business Daily

In a February 5 article in Investor’s Business Daily titled “Practice How to Escape the Perfectionist Bubble,” Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD shared her advice for business people like her who are perfectionists in everything they do. “Ditch perfectionism,” she said.

An overwhelming desire to get things “just right” can lead to great achievements in business, she said. But it can also serve as a trap that triggers indecisiveness and unnecessary delays. “Success is often in the details,” Vickie said. “But it’s a balancing act to address those details without going overboard.”

“By continuing to perfect something small, you may prevent bigger results for your business,” she added. “You never have all the resources to do everything you want to do, so you have to choose.”

To quell her perfectionism, Vickie resists constantly modifying a finished product. Instead, she’ll note her ideas so she can easily incorporate them into the next version of the product.

Investor’s Business Daily, a national newspaper with an average daily readership of 200,000, provides business, financial and investment news.

Build Up Your CLNC® Business with My 10 Strategies as Published in Small Business Success

The fall issue of Small Business Success, a publication of the Small Business Administration (SBA), featured my article, “Power Player: Put Force Behind Your Business with These 10 Inner Strengths.” My article was based on the 10 inherent strengths described in Inside Every Woman: Using the 10 Strengths You Didn’t Know You Had to Get the Career and Life You Want Now. These strengths can give any entrepreneur a business edge. Sharpen this edge, and you become a force to be reckoned with.

Build up your CLNC® business by building the 10 strengths I described in the article:

  1. Fire – No matter how much you love your business, you won’t love it every minute of every day. Practice being “on fire” even when doing mundane tasks.
  2. Intuitive Vision – When making business decisions, don’t always wait for all the facts to come in. While you are waiting, a great business opportunity may just pass you by. Be willing to step out with no guarantee.
  3. Engagement – Eliminate small engagements – things that make you feel good when you check them off your “to do” list, but don’t accomplish much. Instead, focus on engaging in big things that will move your business forward.
  4. Agility – The agility to stretch and grow comes from challenging fixed viewpoints – yours and others’. Strive to surpass even your own boundaries.
  5. Genius – True genius happens when you seek out other voices – people who don’t always agree with you. As you explore diverse opinions, ideas spark, and you arrive at a place you couldn’t have reached alone, raising your venture to a new level.
  6. Integrity – Your integrity is always under the scrutiny of your employees and clients. Deliver on every promise, even when it’s difficult or when a more exciting opportunity beckons. Only through integrity will you achieve authentic success.
  7. Endurance – When your business is booming, you need endurance to keep up. When your business dips, you need endurance to wrangle it back on course. Don’t wait for the big win – fuel your endurance by celebrating the small wins along the way.
  8. Enterprise – Entrepreneurs approach every commitment expecting a payoff. Before you invest time or resources on a project, evaluate the payoff. If something costs you money without a sufficient return, either find a way to make that project profitable or ditch it.
  9. Renewal – Running a business requires phenomenal energy – physical, emotional and mental. You wouldn’t feed a thoroughbred potato chips all day and expect it to win a race. Reenergize often with good, healthy food and exercise.
  10. Fusion – As the driving force behind your business, you are expected to have all the answers. Where do you go for inspiration? Maintain strong connections and fuse often with exceptional mentors to recharge your personal resilience and that of your CLNC® practice.

Applying just one of your 10 inherent strengths will dramatically improve your business and life. Harness all 10, and you’ll be an unbeatable force.

Attendees at the Texas Conference for Women Were Hungry to Learn My Unconventional Strategies for Balancing Work and Life

On October 12, 2006 in Austin, I spoke at the Texas Conference for Women where 8,000 women were in attendance.

My topic was “Beyond the Work/Life Balancing Act.” People everywhere are hungry to learn how to juggle the demands of life and career. I gave five unconventional strategies on maintaining balance in your life while growing your career dreams. I could tell these audience members were tuned in to my talk and appreciated receiving my practical advice rather than the usual candy-coated counsel given in most self-help books.

The Texas Conference for Women is the state’s premier educational and networking event for women. Other speakers at this year’s conference included Martha Stewart, Grammy® award-winning singer Yolanda Adams and Nancy Goodman Brinker, the founder of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. I felt privileged to share the platform with them.

BusinessMakers Radio Show Features Legal Nurse Consulting

I was the featured guest on the BusinessMakers Radio Show, a Houston radio program focusing on entrepreneurs and experts in entrepreneurship.

I shared how I pioneered the field of legal nurse consulting in 1982. This led to recognition as one of Inc.’s Top 10 Entrepreneurs in the nation.

Whether you start a business or focus your enterprising nature on a hobby or a family goal, I recommend you do the three things that worked for me: 1) Construct a solid foundation. 2) Assemble an extraordinary framework. 3) Act like a CEO.

FOX News Features Vickie as Mentor to an Entire Nursing Industry: Legal Nurse Consulting

FOX News featured Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD, CEO of Vickie Milazzo Institute, as an exemplary leader and the new standard for CEOs. The segment, broadcast on July 21, 2006, showcased her as an entrepreneur who has mentored tens of thousands of RNs to change their lives by becoming Certified Legal Nurse Consultants. But her strong influence doesn’t stop with her students, reported FOX News producer Andrea Watkins. Vickie has cultivated a working environment where she can empower and advance the staff she employs.

Evie Baron-Hernandez, a marketing mentor for the Institute who appeared with Vickie in the television feature, is one of those employees. When she started working for the Institute nine years ago, she was used to the stereotypical treatment of women in corporate America as “window dressing.”

“Vickie didn’t limit me in that way,” Evie said. “She immediately recognized my strengths and saw my potential. Every day she challenged me to do things out of my comfort zone. And this is what I have seen her do with the entire nursing industry.” Even though Evie started out at an entry-level position with low hourly pay, she is now one of the highest paid employees.

Vickie’s Gut Instincts Earn Her a Place in Small Business Success

In Small Business Success, a magazine published for the Small Business Administration, writer Karen M. Kroll interviewed Vickie Milazzo about how entrepreneurs can succeed, as Vickie did, by trusting their instincts.

The October 2005 article, “Going with Your Gut,” opened with a brief synopsis of Vickie’s success story. In 1982, she started her legal nurse consulting business because her instincts told her that attorneys trying medical-related cases needed the consulting services of RNs. “I defied conventional wisdom that said if something hadn’t been done before, it’s not worth doing,” Vickie told Kroll. “I knew I could save attorneys a lot of time and money.” Nurses know more about the medical record than any healthcare provider and are more cost-effective than MDs.

“Some [entrepreneurs], like Milazzo, listen to their instincts and successfully exploit opportunities others don’t even notice,” Kroll wrote. Vickie’s 23 years of success – and the 20,000-plus RNs who have taken her programs – are a testimony to the accuracy of Vickie’s instincts.

Vickie Shares Her Entrepreneurial Success Secrets with BizRadio Network Audience

On August 16, 2005, Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD was the featured guest on The Art of Doing Business program on BizRadio Network. Vickie shared the secrets that made her the pioneer of legal nurse consulting and that continue to help thousands of women rediscover their passion for their lives and careers as Certified Legal Nurse Consultants.

The Art of Doing Business is hosted by Dayna Steele, nominated as Radio Personality of the Year by Billboard magazine and named one of Talkers Magazine‘s 100 Most Important Radio Talk Show Hosts. Dayna called Vickie “an amazing woman…who makes me want to go train with her and start a whole new job.”

Click here to listen to Dayna and Vickie’s interchange.

When Dayna asked Vickie how she created her successful consulting and training business, making good money with a flexible schedule, Vickie responded, “I managed it with great discipline and by staying focused on the big things.” She went on to reveal the 5 Promises she has made daily for more than two decades:

Promise 1
I will live a passionate life.
Promise 2
I will go for it or reject it outright.
Promise 3
I will take one action step a day toward my passionate vision.
Promise 4
I commit to being a success student for life.
Promise 5
I believe I really can do anything.

Vickie told her radio audience Promise 1, I will live a passionate life, is “about waking up every day to not just a life that we love but a career that we love. So often people are focused on TGIF – ‘Thank God It’s Friday.’ Whether I’m at work or whether I’m out playing, I say, ‘Thank God It’s Today.’ ”

Vickie’s second promise, I will go for it or reject it outright, is about not waiting for all conditions in your life to be perfect before you embark on a new career or a life change. She commented, “It’s perfectly okay to say, ‘This is not right for me,’ and reject it outright. The key is to not hold back when we know something is right for us. We have to go for it.”

The third promise, I will take one action step a day toward my passionate vision, is about taking real action to back up your passion and vision for your goals. “Success is in the motion…that’s where it happens,” said Vickie.

When Dayna asked about the fourth promise, I commit to being a success student for life, Vickie explained, “Entrepreneurship requires enormous agility and enterprising skills. The only way you can continue to be agile and enterprising is to learn and grow. There are so many wonderful mentors out there to learn from…writers, speakers, other entrepreneurs. We should be learning from as many people as we can.”

Vickie cited the fifth promise as her favorite. I believe I really can do anything is “all about believing that you can do what you see. Each one of us has a success that we can look to. For me, it was working with patients in the hospital and making split-second decisions that saved lives. When I saw that I could do that, I knew I could do anything and that has definitely helped me. We all have to work on that promise every day.”

In closing, Dayna asked, “When you’ve spent years and years doing one kind of job, what’s the first step you should take to accomplish your goal of becoming an entrepreneur?” Vickie offered this advice to aspiring entrepreneurs: “The very first step is to sit back and listen to whether there’s a passion that can go with the expertise you’ve learned…. Then you have to envision that passion into an entrepreneurial job and do the necessary research and study to turn it into a reality. Don’t let fear get in the way of something big.”

Denver Business Journal Interviews Vickie About Career Opportunities for Nurses

In an August 2005 article about nurse entrepreneurs, the Denver Business Journal featured legal nurse consulting as a career alternative for nurses desiring to get out of hospital nursing, but wanting to continue to use their nursing expertise. According to the article, “Nurses Find Attractive Legal Alternative,” nurses are leaving hospitals and for careers in the legal arena because they’re “frustrated by low wages, long hours and understaffed departments.”

Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD, the pioneer of legal nurse consulting, is quoted on why she created the legal nurse consulting profession, “I felt…like I was in Nepal climbing the Himalayas without oxygen. That little spark was missing…I merely wanted to practice nursing on my own terms.”

The article states that legal nurse consultants in the Denver area report earnings as high as $150 per hour, compared to the $25 per hour nurses earn on average, according to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.

Meg Dunlop, who completed the legal nurse consulting certification program through Vickie Milazzo Institute, left her position as an intensive care and cardiology RN and has worked as a legal nurse consultant for five years. “I have much more flexibility now. They are not the long, 12-hour shifts that require me to be away so much,” Dunlop said.

According to the American Bar Association Market Research Department, there are 1,104,766 practicing attorneys in the U.S. – plenty to keep thousands of CLNC® Consultants busy full time.

Texas Bar Journal Features Stevie Award Winner Vickie Milazzo

Institute founder Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD was featured in the December 2004 Texas Bar Journal, the best-read legal publication in Texas. The article, “Improving the Health of Law Practices,” educated the magazine’s 89,000 subscribers about the CLNC® profession and Vickie’s Mentor of the Year Stevie® Award (business’s Oscar®).

The bar journal reported how CLNC® consultants improve the health of law firms. “A CLNC® consultant can review and interpret relevant medical records, research standards of care, prepare chronologies, screen medical-related cases, and assist with discovery.”

According to the Texas Bar Journal, 92.4% of Texas lawyers read every issue. We are sure many of them would agree with this comment from Vickie’s interview: “Few attorneys know how to read medical records or understand the terminology and subtleties of healthcare issues to achieve the best results for their clients. While the attorney is the expert on legal issues, the CLNC® consultant is the expert on nursing and the healthcare system and its inner workings….our Institute helps improve the health of law practices that deal with medical issues.”

As a CLNC® consultant you should think about innovative ways to educate attorneys regarding the CLNC® services you can deliver to improve the health of their law practices. Start today.

JAVA Magazine Features Vickie and Publishes Her 12 Success Secrets

The Journal of the Association for Vascular Access (JAVA) recently featured Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD as an entrepreneur expert for the article, “Pursuit of an Independent Vision – A Conversation with Five Entrepreneurs.” These nursing leaders share their experiences and successes as independent business owners. They offer practical advice to healthcare professionals who are interested in starting their own businesses. In the article, Vickie advises every RN to do three things to guarantee success:

  1. Live your passion.
  2. Act as decisively as you do with challenging clinical situations so the fear of making a mistake never paralyzes you.
  3. Put your skills at triaging and prioritizing multiple tasks to work in a nursing business you love.

She reminds readers that, “Where you focus your energy, attention and effort is where you will achieve results.” Focus big.

In the same Spring 2004 issue, JAVA published Vickie’s article, “12 Things Nursing Taught Me About Owning a Business,” In it Vickie shows how even the most routine nursing job is full of life lessons that nurses can apply to the business world. Acting quickly and decisively is just one of these 12 success secrets RNs can transfer to their CLNC® practices.

Workforce Management Magazine Features Entrepreneur Expert Vickie

Vickie was recently featured in Workforce Management magazine. The article, “A Reward Money Can’t Buy,” spotlights Vickie as an entrepreneur expert who genuinely practices what she preaches.

“I want my employees to feel an ownership of the company on some level, but since we’re a private company, they can’t buy stock,” she says. Instead, the 22 employees are rewarded for overall company success with time off.

The company uses many other motivational techniques, but the days off are by far the most popular.

Every CLNC® consultant can think about innovative ways to motivate and reward their CLNC® subs and employees. Start today. It works.

California Publication Features Certified Legal Nurse Consultants and Vickie

A recent article, “Consultants Bridge Medical-Legal Gap,” appeared in The Modesto Bee. This California daily newspaper interviewed Vickie and three successful CLNC® consultants for a story on this “attractive career change” for nurses. CLNC® consultants talked with the reporter about how “The investigative aspect of legal nurse consulting appeals to many nurses.” Each nurse briefly described why she became a CLNC® consultant.

Readers learned that, “By helping the legal system understand complex language and protocol of the medical universe, nurse consultants can help deter abuse and fraud, and hold negligent doctors or nurses accountable.”

Vickie is quoted, “I always tell them they have skills no one else on the planet has. Consulting gives many nurses the satisfying career they want.”

The New York Times Profiles Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD

On Sunday, February 18, 2001, the Business section of The New York Times profiled Vickie as a leader in the field of legal nurse consulting. This article was exciting for legal nurse consulting as a specialty practice. Attorneys nationwide saw the story, and the powerful reputation of The New York Times gave our profession instant credibility. This kind of visibility, worth more than a fortune in mere advertising, paved the way for you in your marketing efforts.

Sacramento Business Journal Features Certified Legal Nurse Consultants and Vickie

The Sacramento Business Journal featured Vickie and two successful CLNC® consultants in the article “Nurses Enjoy New Vistas with Consulting Side Jobs.”

Vickie L. Milazzo points out that, “Part of what’s attractive about legal nurse consulting is we have more than a million attorneys in the United States and they deal with everything from medical malpractice to personal injury cases.”

Another attraction is the pay. Legal nurse consultants can earn much more than they earn from nursing, and they can do the work part time. Vickie also reminds us that, “The average age of an RN is mid-40s, so it’s just natural that nurses at some stage would look for other ways to use their experience and expertise.” She herself only had 6 years of nursing experience before becoming a successful legal nurse consultant.

Barbara Christensen, RN, BSN, PHN, CLNC agrees. “It’s a stimulating way to expand your career. So as you burn out on the type of job you’re doing, it gives you another way to use the expertise you already have.”

Terra Wellington of Balanced Living™ Seeks Vickie’s Educational Expertise

Terra Wellington is a consumer wellness expert and she interviewed Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD for the article “Education Brings Lasting Joy” in her column, Balanced Living.

The article quotes Vickie as saying, “The people who are the happiest are the ones who are always growing. The only way you can grow is to learn.” Reports Vickie, “No matter your income level or age, there are always possibilities of learning.”

As students of the Institute already know, Vickie is passionate about education. That passion began early. Her favorite game growing up in New Orleans was teaching her imaginary class. And now she teaches thousands of nurses every year.

She follows the same advice as she gives her students, and she makes sure her learning is purposeful and focused. Massively successful people focus on learning the right things. For example, Vickie asks, “Do you want to learn about the life of a movie star or about something that is going to help you become the star of your own life?”

Make education a priority and commit to being a lifetime student. With this commitment of self-directed learning you will earn many “degrees” during your lifetime.

Pittsburgh Business Times Interviews Vickie About Nurse
Entrepreneurs

In a January 2003 article about nurse entrepreneurs, the Pittsburgh Business Times discussed various career routes nurses take to get out of the hospital and use their nursing expertise in a different way. According to the article, this migration from the bedside to entrepreneurship is happening because nurses are “so disenchanted with the hospital setting that they’re opting to start their own businesses.”

Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD, “the nurse who is credited for pioneering the legal nurse consulting profession,” is quoted as saying, “Working conditions in the hospital are a lot worse than they were 10 years ago…. The workload on nurses these days is a lot more than it used to be.”

One of Vickie’s students, Leigh Ann Chermak, RN, CLNC, is also featured in the article. “Part of the reason I’m doing this is to be at home,” says Leigh Ann, who is expecting her first child. “You have to market yourself and get your name out there…. The overhead is minimal with only a computer, fax and business stationery needed to get started.”

Like Leigh Ann, many nurses are turning to the Vickie Milazzo Institute for training and certification in legal nurse consulting. The most obvious benefit: nurses-turned-consultants earn more while working less. Certified Legal Nurse Consultants (CLNC® consultants) typically earn up to $150/hour. In addition, the flexibility, the low start-up costs and the chance to use hard-earned nursing expertise in exciting medical-related legal cases make this lucrative profession even more appealing to nurses.

Vickie Featured in Entrepreneur Magazine

In the January 2003 issue of Entrepreneur, Vickie Milazzo and Tom Ziemba were interviewed for an article titled, “Do You Take This Man?” In 1984 Vickie hired her husband Tom as her first employee.

The story features women entrepreneurs who have hired their spouses as employees. Vickie and Tom share some of the many benefits of working together, such as the 10 weeks of vacation they take each year, a fitting reward for the long hours they spend keeping the business on track. But there’s a bigger benefit. Vickie states, “Because we are both involved in the business, I never feel that he doesn’t understand my commitment to it.”

Innovator Vickie L. Milazzo Awarded Most Innovative Small Business

Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD was recognized as the Most Innovative Small Business because she pioneered a new profession for RNs, the profession of legal nurse consulting.

The innovation award and Vickie’s story were featured in Priority magazine, the publication that office tech giant Pitney Bowes distributes to 800,000 small business owners worldwide. 800,000 Americans (who are successful themselves) are now educated about legal nurse consulting.

Neal J. Metviner, president, PB Direct says, “of the numerous nominations we received, this business stood out as both exemplary and inspirational.”

“Many nurses believe the only way to apply their nursing skills is in a traditional hospital setting,” says Vickie. “But RNs possess valuable skills that also make them successful consultants.”

Vickie continues, “A large part of my business is training other RNs to be innovative themselves. Innovation isn’t just the initial great idea. It is daily action. To innovate, they must constantly question, probe and challenge every aspect of their business, its processes and systems.

“If nurses can save lives in the middle of the night with no doctor in sight, they can also use that drive and decision-making ability to operate successful consulting practices.”

Lawyers Weekly USA Educates Lawyers about Legal Nurse Consulting

When Lawyers Weekly USA called wanting to interview me because I pioneered legal nurse consulting, I was thrilled. This major national newspaper is one of my favorite publications. Attorneys pay up to $289/year to subscribe (28% of subscribers are millionaires). According to the Lawyers Weekly USA website, their subscribers referred 223,000 cases in the last 12 months. So you can see why I took the time to talk to their reporter, even though I was rushing off to the airport for a dream vacation in Africa.

Since approximately half of Lawyers Weekly USA subscribers handle medical-related cases, I knew the readership for the article, “Finding the Right Nurse for Your Firm,” would be high. The story informed attorneys that legal nurse consultants can work on a variety of cases, such as workers’ comp, products liability and criminal as well as medical malpractice. Now the thousands of attorneys who read and respect Lawyers Weekly USA know more about what legal nurse consultants can do to help them win their cases.

Remember to always educate your attorney-clients and everyone else you know about the many specialized consulting services you can provide. For a quick refresher on the 32 services CLNC® consultants can offer click here. Suggest to your clients how one or two of these consulting services can benefit their legal practice. Continue adding value and more services, and you’ll win repeat business.

Success Is Yours!

Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD

P.S. Following the publication of this article, I sent a letter to the editor. It was published in the October 28 issue ofLawyers Weekly USA. In it I stressed, “Having worked with attorneys and legal nurse consultants for 20 years, I know that an attorney who represents a client (plaintiff or defense) on a medical-related case without the expertise of a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant is at risk for being sued for legal malpractice.” This is the real message the legal community and every consumer need to understand. Please help spread this vital message to everyone you know.

Houston Chronicle Features Vickie and the Legal Nurse Consulting Profession

After interviewing Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD, the Houston Chronicle (Houston’s major daily newspaper) published an article on Vickie and the profession of legal nurse consulting in the Sunday, January 27, 2002 edition.

In the article, “Nurse Consultants Tackle Medical-Legal Issues,” Chronicle correspondent Alice Adams reported that, “Legal nurse consultants who have earned an RN will charge anywhere from $75 to $150, depending on the consultant and their experience. Compared to what physicians usually charge – often $400 an hour – nurse consultants have become a cost-effective solution to getting cases analyzed prior to trial.”

The article also pointed out that “of the approximately 900,000 attorneys in practice today, 25 percent deal with medical malpractice and personal injury cases. Sheer numbers indicate the growing need for specialized legal nurse consultants.”

Vickie is quoted as saying, “Attorneys are seeking nursing experience. Attorneys know the law and they understand the legal implications of a case. What they need is an interpreter to help them understand the medical aspects of the trial.”

The piece featured a photo of two of Vickie’s students, Copia Westbrook, RN, and Jennifer Fougerousse, RN, CLNC, consulting on a complicated medical case. In addition to outlining the typical steps in an LNC’s involvement in a medical malpractice case, the article gave an overview of the Institute’s training programs.

Vickie Featured in Employment Review

In an article titled “Medical Entrepreneurs Provide Dose of Innovation,” Employment Review, November 2001, Vickie speaks out about how nurses are looking for entrepreneurial career options. The article includes Vickie’s comments on a survey of her students which established some of the key reasons nurses seek entrepreneurship:

  • “To make a difference in people’s lives”
  • “To be financially independent”
  • “To be your own boss”
  • “To be in charge of your future”
  • “To have flexibility and control over your life”
  • “To be part of something new and exciting”
  • “To keep your brain functioning”

Entrepreneurs are innovators who have a desire to revolutionize. RNs are no different. RNs go into legal nurse consulting because it allows them to stay in the medical field yet do something totally different, challenging and stimulating. To be a legal nurse consultant, Vickie says, takes “…commitment, persistence and perseverance…. Being an entrepreneur is very demanding and very time-consuming.” She suggests that entrepreneurs find mentors to guide them along the way.

In summary, Vickie says, “There is no magic to being an entrepreneur. It’s not about what someone’s IQ is or how many degrees you have behind your name. It’s about getting in there and working at it.”

Houston Business Journal Features Vickie and the Legal Nurse Consulting Profession

Attorneys who read the Houston Business Journal know more about the legal nurse consulting profession. This popular business weekly interviewed Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD, for their quarterly special focus on healthcare, citing her as the pioneer of this field.

In the article, Denise Heath-Graham, RN, CLNC, praised the LNC training she received through the Vickie Milazzo Institute: “The training positioned me for success and provided the encouragement and support I needed to actually get out there and do it.”

“With fees ranging to $150 an hour,” Vickie says, “legal nurse consulting is more lucrative than the typical nursing job.” Jennifer Fougerousse, RN, CLNC, of League City, Texas, reports that she is now making more money working part time as a legal nurse consultant than she did working part time in the hospital.

Jennifer says she considers the training in legal terminology and understanding “the attorney’s viewpoint” to be among the most valuable parts of the the Institute’s home-study course she took. “I don’t feel I’ve lost any of my nursing knowledge. I’ve gained more than I ever could have in a hospital setting,” says the Certified Legal Nurse Consultant.

CLNC® Success Stories Book Featured in AORN Journal

The AORN Journal published a review of the Institute’s book CLNC® Success Stories. According to the review, “This book will serve as an inspiration to any professional nurse considering a career as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant.” Mentioning that the contributing successful CLNC® consultants are nurses from diverse backgrounds, the reviewer adds, “The book shows that a nursing education can serve as a foundation for a career in business as well as acute care.”

The review also states that CLNC® Success Stories addresses many aspects of running a successful business, such as “managing time, setting up an office, writing a business plan, and marketing the business.” The reviewer goes on to say, “Each contributor discusses a different set of obstacles and strategies for coping with and overcoming them.”

The reviewer stresses that, “Each CLNC® consultant partially or wholly attributes her success to participation in an educational program offered by the editor of this book,” the pioneer in legal nurse consulting, Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD. “Each CLNC® consultant regards Vickie as an exceptional coach and mentor who empowered her to fashion a profitable career as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant.”

Vickie Featured in West University Examiner

Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD was recently featured in the West University Examiner. In the article, “Legal Nurses Bridge Two Fields,” Vickie was in “pioneer mode,” educating readers about the value of nurses’ knowledge and how they are making a difference in the legal community as Certified Legal Nurse Consultants (CLNC® consultants). The article recognized the Institute as the “oldest and largest training center in the industry.”

“So many nurses think nursing didn’t prepare them for having a business,” Vickie said in the article, “not true.” Vickie’s profound belief that “Nurses Can Do Anything” is the very core of her own success. She constantly reminds nurses that they make split-second life-or-death decisions for patients. Surely they can do something as simple as explain a medical record to an attorney.

The article stressed the increased demand for CLNC® consultants by stating, “Demand for legal nurse services took off two decades ago with the rise in medical-related litigation, consumer health awareness and health care reform.”

Nursing Spectrum Career Fitness Guide Interviews Vickie on Charting a New Legal Course

Vickie discussed the rewards of legal nurse consulting in Nursing Spectrum’s Career Fitness Guide. In the article, “Nurses Charting a New (Legal) Course,” Vickie distinguished between legal nurse consultants and nurse-paralegals.

“We have the right to define who we are,” Vickie said. “An RN interfaces so well with the legal profession… because the LNC focuses on core competencies.”

“You have autonomy, flexibility and control over your own career,” Vickie concluded. “You also have the ability to make a difference and see the impact of that difference.”

Vickie Advises the Readers of Ladies’ Home Journal

RNs across our country shared their inside tips for navigating the healthcare system in the July 2002 issue of Ladies’ Home Journal. Writer Hallie Levine interviewed Vickie and other RNs – the real experts on health – to find answers to questions like, “How do you find the right doctor?”

One of Vickie’s tips to the magazine’s 4,100,000 subscribers is, “Don’t hesitate to dump your doctor if she refuses to listen to you. No one knows more about your own body than you do. If your physician isn’t willing to pay attention to you, chances are she isn’t giving you good medical care. After all, diagnosis is ninety-five percent listening and five percent medical tests and exams.”

Check out the July 2002 Ladies’ Home Journal. You’ll love this article full of wise advice from Vickie and your RN colleagues.

Vickie Hits the Airwaves on How Women Shop

The “Houston Business Show” on Business Radio 650AM recently featured Vickie as special guest. She told radio host Kevin J. Price how women buy, explaining that for women the buying experience is both physiological and psychological. Physiologically, women use their five senses when they are buying, but they also seek to fill an emotional need with each purchase.

For example, the RNs who are researching legal nurse consulting are seeking to change their career which can ultimately change their life.

For this reason trust is a must in the relationship between the Institute and that RN. Here are two things the Institute does to assure the RN that she will have little to risk financially or emotionally when choosing the CLNC® Certification Program:

  1. Guarantee the program with the risk-free guarantee.
  2. Provide FREE mentoring through practicing CLNC® consultants after purchase and as long as they remain certified.

Similar principles can be applied to your attorney-client relationships to ensure they aren’t out shopping for LNC services from your competitors.

Sigma Theta Tau Features Vickie as a Nursing Leader

Sigma Theta Tau featured Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD, as a nursing leader in its first issue of the 2002 Reflections on Nursing Leadership journal. The article entitled “Nothing but the Truth” not only profiled Vickie but also described legal nurse consulting in-depth.

“Nobody knows better than an RN what should be inside a medical record,” said Vickie. “In the next 20 years we’ll see even more impact of RNs interfacing with the legal world. There is a big distinction between reading the lines in a medical chart and reading between the lines. You can figure out what’s not there that should be there. You are able to interpret those meanings that aren’t so obvious to a nonhealth-care professional.” The award-winning news magazine of the nursing honor society Sigma Theta Tau International also told readers, “An LNC may work independently or as an in-house member of a legal team.”

Vickie Shares 4 Entrepreneurship Tips with TV Viewers

Sunday morning viewers of Houston’s number one television station heard from entrepreneurship expert, Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD.

Vickie revealed to the KTRK-TV (ABC) audience the 4 commitments she made to herself back in 1982 when she first started her legal nurse consulting business. These promises helped her get where she is today, and she coaches every CLNC® student to make these same promises when starting their CLNC® practices.

  1. Find your passion and turn it into a business.
  2. Go for it or reject it outright.
  3. Take one action step to advance your business idea each day.
  4. Commit to being a lifetime student.

Even after 20 years, Vickie still makes these commitments daily. Make Vickie’s commitments a part of your life and you too will live your career dreams.

Vickie Quoted in Emerging Business

In the Winter 2002 edition of Emerging Business, Vickie was interviewed for an article titled “Finders, Keepers: Finding – and Keeping Customers in Today’s Competitive World.” Emerging Business is partially funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and it spotlights companies that exemplify SBA goals and objectives. In the article Vickie outlines what she does to attract and keep customers. Following the same advice she gives her students, she offers her risk-free guarantee, as well as many other benefits, such as FREE mentoring to her students and CLNC® consultants.

The same principles apply to your LNC practice. Offer your attorney-clients more than your competitors and add value to any service you provide. If your attorney asks for library research, include your opinion of the research and show how it applies to the case. Send an informational newsletter with bits of medical information that will be valuable to the attorney. And don’t forget to offer your own risk-free guarantee on your work product. By implementing a few of these simple strategies, you, too, can keep the attorney-clients you find.

Vickie Speaks Out on Healthcare Career Options

The news magazine for businesswomen, Women’s Enterprise, profiled Vickie as one of the women at the forefront of new opportunities in the dynamic, changing field of healthcare. In the article, “Expanding Health-Care Career Horizons,” Vickie says that, “Nursing taught me great respect for appreciating that what feels hard today will feel easy tomorrow. I find I have my most dramatic days and best results when I start with the more difficult things. When you delay making important decisions, they often get made for you.”

According to the article, “As both the healthcare system and the legal system become more complex, Milazzo’s firm trains nurses to provide medical expertise to attorneys on health-related cases.” Vickie encourages nurses to develop core competencies that can help them make the transition to business. She reminds readers, “The ones who make their career dreams come true are the nurses who put action to their dreams. A vision without action is nothing more than a hallucination.”
